It is with great pleasure that I begin my twenty-ninth year of service and I look forward to meeting with all of you. The start of a new school year brings many new and exciting opportunities. I encourage you to reflect upon your passions, and challenge yourself with our extensive academic course offerings. I would also like to invite you to become involved in some of the many extracurricular activities we have to offer, as I am sure that you will find them to be rewarding. HUMAN ECOLOGY DEPARTMENT

COLLEGE APPLIED NUTRITION

Interested in nutrition? We have a nutrition based class for juniors and senior level students. It is a three-credit college class for

three SUNY biology credits. These are some of the topics that we cover.

We investigate our own eating habits. What is healthy eating? What are the basic principles?

Who are we? When do we eat? Where do we eat?

How do we plan meals? Then we get into the biology part. How do we digest the foods and absorb the nutrients that we're eating?

We go through the whole biological process from mouth to stomach to intestine.

We investigate problems that might happen along the way.

Macronutrients an interest? How about carbohydrates? What food is a carbohydrate? What about fiber? How are they healthy

for us? What happens if we don't have enough? We also investigate the foods that we eat, and how well we're doing compared to some of the guidelines.

And we investigate documentaries and TED Talks on the best way to eat, from fats and lipids to proteins. What are the pros

and cons of an animal-based versus a plant-based diet? Want more?  How about vitamins, minerals, deficiencies and toxicities, chronic

diseases, energy balance and weight control, physical activity, and nutrition for the lifecycle? Join us for College Applied Nutrition,

a three-credit SUNY Farmingdale biology class for Junior and senior level students.

DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY AND CHILD STUDY LAB

Developmental Psychology is a perfect elective for a 9th grade student. In this class we study development from birth through death.  Students will conduct interviews,

create projects, and have class discussions to learn how we develop throughout the life span.

Child Study Lab is an elective available to 10th graders with prerequisites in Child Development and Psychology. Four-year-old children from the district

participate three days a week for two hours. High school students plan and prepare activities such as art projects, science projects, field

trips in the high school, music activities, and the Handwriting Without Tears writing readiness program. Perhaps you might recognize some of the incoming 9th

grade students who were in this class way back in 2010, 2011.

MATHEMATICS/COMPUTER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

I'm Ray Gessner. I'm the Assistant Principal in the building and this year I have the good fortune of being the person in charge of the Math Department. I'm working

with Mr. Depalo who is also assisting in helping to run the department and get things done. So, if there's ever a time you need anything in regards to mathematics, questions about

classes, offerings, or stuff like that you can certainly contact me. I'm in the main office at the high school, or Mr. Depalo who's available up in the math office.

The Math Department itself is incredibly, incredibly talented and gifted people who love and have a tremendous passion for mathematics.

As a whole they want to take that passion and share it with the students to make sure they also learn not only  

the logic and the steps behind mathematics, but also the beauty of mathematics. What is good that comes from numbers? What is good that comes from thinking logically

and coming to a really good conclusion about the truth? How do we derive the truth? By doing proofs, by doing math, by doing things through numbers.

I was math agnostic, but now I'm a true believer that it is the kind of thing that helps us think more logically and gets us to the truth

more readily. What you're going to see if you go down to the links on this page, and see  what we offer in terms of the courses, what's available for your students,

and how they are going to proceed in high school with mathematics.

Take a look, see what it is that interests your child, see what it is that is the goal at the end of the process, and see how you can get on that path.

Studying Honors in one course does not mean students must study honors in all courses. Your child has four years of opportunity at Syosset High School, and there are multiple “on ramps” to Honors, Advanced, and AP coursework. Hi everyone. My name is John Durante and I want to welcome you to Syosset High School and this year's orientation program. I started my career here in Syosset in 1994 where I served

as a World Language teacher. I also served as a dean, assistant principal, and I'm most proud to be serving as your principal since 2010. Please sit back, relax,

and enjoy this presentation overview of all of the courses that we have to offer and our clubs. And when you get a chance take a look at our ebook, take your time

One of the many things that I love about Syosset High School is the depth of our programs and the opportunities we afford our students while recognizing that it's not enough to have a curriculum manual or program

in place, but it's thanks to the talents of our teachers that bring these programs to fruition. We have four years to teach our students math, science, social studies, English

and much, much more. But more importantly, we have four years to teach them to learn to advocate for themselves while immersing themselves in everything we have to offer, both inside

and outside of the classroom.  Our mission statement says that we are dedicated to meeting the social, emotional, and academic needs of all our students while preparing them for a

life of learning and contribution. And when we say all students, we mean all students.

Syosset High School truly has something for everyone both inside and outside of the classroom.  In addition to our vast academic course offerings, we have over a hundred

clubs and groups for our students to explore their interests and find that true passions. Our co-curricular program can be divided into three basic categories, competitive

I will review some of those co-curricular activities for you, starting with our special-interest clubs. I stated that Syosset High School has something for everyone, and if we don't have we do

our best to add it. I want to share a story from a few years ago when an incoming 9th grade student came to visit me during the summer with his mom.

The STAT student new at such a young age that he wanted to be a doctor. He came to visit me to say that he wanted Syosset High School to start a pre-medical society.  At that point

in time we didn't have such a club but, thanks to the student's vision for his own future and ability to want to help others we now have a Pre-Med Society as one of our special interest clubs.

The Pre-Med Society invites doctors from various fields of medicine each month to talk to the students about the realities of the medical field. Some of the topics include going to medical school,

dealing with insurance companies, and anything else the students want to talk about. So, again, I encourage you to immerse yourself in everything that, we have and if there's something that we don't have don't

Another special interest club is our ACT or Theater Club. If your child likes to dance, sing, act, or build and design sets, the ACT Club is the place for them. After

four years of being in the ACT Club a student could have on their resume four Shakespearean plays, four fall dramas, four musicals and other activities,

such as our annual one-act play competition and the Bardathon. Many of our students pursue a career in theater, and the ACT Club provides a college fair where we bring

back former students who are now working in theaters themselves, some of them on Broadway.  This network that our students have created for themselves with both past and current students is an example

of how Syosset High School is a large school with a small school feel.

All of the sets for our many productions are designed and built by our students, under the supervision, of course, of our teachers in our stage design class and club. So if your child likes to

design and build this might be something they wish to explore during their time here at Syosset High School.

Another special interest club is our radio station WKWZ which broadcasts live each week on 88.5 FM. Whether your child is into playing music

or doing sports talk, WKWZ might be the perfect club for them. We are only one of three high schools on all of Long Island that have an actual radio station. 

And this is yet another opportunity we provide our students during their time here.

Syosset High School offers a number of competitive clubs. One of our most popular clubs is our Forensics Speech and Debate Team. Forensics competes in two separate leagues at the local, state,

and national level. Each year this club is recognized as one of the best forensics teams in the country. So if your child is interested in speech and debate, or perhaps they want to be a lawyer

or public figure, this might be the club for them.

Another competitive club is our DECA Business Club. Thirty percent of our students major in business when they go to college. We encourage them to take advantage of our vast

course offerings within our Business Department, but also get involved with DECA if they are planning on pursuing business. This is a photo of our students at the state competition up in Rochester, 

Our Mock Trial Team is an excellent choice for students who want to enter the field of law. After competing locally against other high schools, a select few are chosen to compete in the Supreme

Court building in Mineola. This is a recent photo, pre-pandemic of course, of the Syosset High School Mock Trial Team competing for the Long Island Championship in Mineola.

Syosset High School also offers many service clubs as we want to teach our students the importance of giving back to their community.  One of the clubs that I will highlight is our Future Leaders of America club,

which organizes a senior citizens prom each year for members of our local nursing homes. The FLA club serves meals and organizes every aspect

of the prom including table seating, while our music ensembles provide amazing entertainment. We are hoping to get back to these types of events shortly.  Our Student Government

is the umbrella organization for all of our clubs and activities. They meet formally each week as a student body, and with my cabinet once a month.  All of our activities and fundraisers

are approved through our Student Government.  There are no activities that get organized without their help. This includes our annual St. Baldrick's fundraiser, Cystic Fibrosis Phone-athon,

and, of course, our annual carnival. If you want to get involved in all of the great things that Syosset High School offers beyond the classroom, you may want to consider joining Student Government which includes

students that have been elected to a particular position and those who participate regardless. I would like to now discuss high school graduation requirements. If you look at

this slide, it outlines the number of units or years of study required for a local diploma or Regents diploma and, of course, an advanced Regents diploma.

In all cases the total units necessary are twenty-two, which students at Syosset High School will far exceed by the end of their four years here at the high school. In addition to

the graduation requirements listed on the previous slide students will need five Regents exams to earn their Regents diploma. Usually, those five exams include English

(which is taken at the end of 11th grade) Global History (which is taken at the end of 10th grade) U.S. History (which is taken at the end of 11th grade), Algebra (which is taken at the end of

8th grade, or 9th grade, depending on when you're enrolled in Algebra) and Earth Science (which, again, depending on when you enroll is taken at the end of 8th or 9th grade).

In addition, if you wish to earn an Advanced Regents Diploma you will need three other examinations as listed on the slide. Rest assured that your guidance counselors will walk you through every

step of meeting your graduation requirements, along with guiding you every step of the way through the college process. Before I begin speaking in detail about some of our academic areas, I want to

emphasize that Syosset High School offers multiple pathways for each and every one of our students to be successful.

Some of the main points to remember is that Syosset High School has something everyone, both inside and outside of the classroom. But in addition to that, we want to remind all students

to be kind to yourself in 9th grade and create a balanced schedule. It's also important to note that Syosset High Schools has four years of opportunity with multiple

on-ramps to advanced coursework.  My advice is to listen to the teachers' recommendations regarding course selections.  The teachers know you, the children, and

our experts regarding our academic program. I will now review the course selections in each academic department for 9th grade students. However, before I begin, I'd like to

start by reminding everyone that taking lunch is an essential part of high school. Taking lunch allows students an opportunity to take a break, eat, and perhaps, more importantly,

be with friends. Again, we recommend that everyone take a lunch period as we have a nine period day, and there is plenty of time to schedule classes. Students need

to take four years of English to meet their graduation requirement.  In English we basically have two course selections for incoming 9th grade students. Students may either take English 9 Enriched,

or English 9 Honors. Although each prepares the students for the English Regents taken at the end of 11th grade, the main difference is that in the English 9 Honors course

you will be expected to dig deeper into the text, which are selected, of course, by your teachers while also being expected to do a lot more independent reading.

So if you love English, you love to read, you love literature English 9 Honors might be a good choice for you. If you need a little bit more support

and want a little bit more reading in class, 9 Enriched might be the perfect choice for you.

Looking at this slide, regardless of the course you select in 9th grade there are multiple pathways and opportunities to take higher level courses, especially when you're in 11th

and 12th grade through our English course offerings. So again, be kind to yourself and create a balanced schedule based on your teachers' recommendations, Syosset offers multiple

on-ramps to advanced coursework later in your high school career regardless of which English course or any course you select in 9th grade which is part of what I will

show you throughout this presentation. Students need to take four years of social studies to meet their graduation requirement. in social studies. We list three options but, in reality, the vast majority

of students select one of two. Most students either take AP World History 1, which has replaced Honors program in social studies, or they enroll

in Global History and Geography 9 Enriched. Both courses lead to the Regents examination in Global History which students take at the end of 10th grade, while the AP World

History 1 is the AP World History course but taken over two years.  Those students will take AP World History 1 in 9th grade, usually followed

by AP World History 2. And so, at the end of 10th grade, they will take the AP examination

in May and the Regents examination in Global History in June.  A third option is AP World History.  This course is for students who absolutely

love history, enjoy doing a lot of reading particularly about history and want nothing more than to talk about, what else?  History! 

They take the AP examination after one year. That's at the end of 9th grade. We usually only have twenty students enroll in this class again, as the vast majority of

9th graders select either Global History 9 or AP World History 1.

Again, as you can see from this diagram, regardless of the social studies course you select in 9th grade, Syosset High School offers you multiple opportunities to take higher level courses later

in your high school career. So be kind to yourself and select a balanced schedule by listening to advice of your teachers and guidance counselor. Although the graduation

requirement for science is three years of coursework, the vast majority of students at Syosset High School go well beyond the three year requirement.  The incoming 9th grade class basically

has three options in science.  If you are currently taking Earth Science as an 8th grader your choice as a 9th grader is to take Biology or Biology Honors which has a research

component attached to it.  Biology Honors with research meets two periods per day, while Biology meets every day with a lab section meeting

on alternate days. If you are not yet enrolled in Earth Science, you will take Earth Science in 9th grade.  Earth Science, like Biology meets every day

with an alternating day lab. The following diagram shows that, regardless of which course you take in 9th grade, Syosset High School provides you with multiple opportunities to take science

courses that may interest you, far beyond the three year requirement. These courses include Oceanography, Physics, and Forensic Science which so many of our students

enjoy.  Just as in science, the mathematics graduation requirement is three years. However, again, the vast majority of our students go beyond the three year requirement as

a 9th grader. You basically have the choice of taking Geometry or Algebra. If you are not currently enrolled in Algebra, then you will take Algebra in 9th grade.

Otherwise, you will have three choices within Geometry. Those choices are Geometry, Geometry Honors, and Geometry with a lab. All those students that take Geometry

in 9th grade are accelerated. It does not mean, however, that all qualify for Geometry Honors, just because you're accelerated.  Students

that are in our Geometry Honors program, consistently score a 95% and above on exams and on class assignments while taking Algebra in 8th grade. 

Those students are also highly recommended by their teachers.  The majority of our students, by the way, take Geometry in 9th grade as It prepares our students well for

the Regents they will take at the end of 9th grade. We also offer a Geometry Lab course which meets daily with a lab period that meets on alternate days.  This course

is for students who have been identified as needing more time on task to successfully learn the Geometry curriculum and pass the New York State Regents in June.

Again follow the advice of your current math teachers.  They will guide you through this process. The following diagram will show that regardless of the course you select a 9th grade in mathematics, students at

Syosset High School will have multiple on-ramps towards a wide variety of higher-level courses during their time at Syosset High School. Again, we can't emphasize the importance of creating a

balanced schedule, which will help you succeed in 9th grade and throughout high school.  In World Language most of our students continue with their study of language in Spanish. French,

Italian, or Chinese.  Please speak to your current teacher for recommendations on which course to take when you get to the high school as we do offer an Honors program

in each of those courses.  In addition to these courses listed the high school offers Korean, American Sign Language, Latin, Japanese and Russian.  

Again we offer multiple opportunities for you to take various courses during your time at Syosset High School.

Physical education is an alternate day requirement for each of the four years that you attend high school. 9th graders have the choice of taking 9th grade General Physical Education or Dance.

Both of these courses fulfill your 9th grade requirement for physical education. In addition to all the courses that I discussed, we offer a vast variety of electives

The Peer Educator course is the first of the four-year Peer Education program at the high school. This special class helps students transition from middle school to high school more easily. Students are extensively trained in communication and leadership skills. They will have the opportunity to teach lessons to their peers, to be peer mentors, and will be asked to help lead their grade in school activities.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION, ATHLETICS, AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT

Hello, my name is Scott Stueber, and I'm the Director of Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation. Physical education is a New York State-mandated graduation requirement for all students.  

Incoming freshmen and sophomore students will be offered a variety of activities and units that provide opportunities for future, elective choices in their Junior and Senior years. In addition, students will attend

Wellness classes which introduce and expand on topics that are important to both the physical health, along with their social-emotional well-being. The focus of the Physical Education Department is to promote

personal growth, as well as an appreciation for lifelong skill sets, and nutritional competencies that go hand-in-hand with exercise and a healthy diet. The Physical Education Department

feel strongly that the social-emotional needs of our students are equally as important to their overall well-being. With this in mind, we take time to engage in activities which promote a healthy and

well-adjusted individual.  Stress reduction has been a major focus in recent years, and the Physical Education staff takes great pride and understanding in providing outlets for stress relief.

As students progress in their Junior and Senior years they will be a variety of electives offered where the goal is to provide an enjoyable experience for all students. First Aid and CPR training are also

included in the curriculum for Juniors and Seniors along, with hands-only CPR training for students in grades nine through twelve. Of course, there are opportunities for students to become lifeguard-certified

along with multiple aquatics courses for any student interested in swimming.

A great elective that has been growing over the last few years is our Strength and Conditioning class open to students in grades ten through twelve.  Students are provided with an opportunity to assess their current fitness level and

develop an individualized fitness plan under the direction of one of our highly qualified physical educators.  Students will learn a variety of lifting techniques including powerlifting, and will

hold the opportunity to compete in the United States Weightlifting High School Throwdown, a national competition.  To date, Syosset has three national champions. We feel your child

will benefit immensely from the courses offered at Syosset High School. I look forward to assisting your child in their aspirations for lifelong wellness.

To meet the needs and interests of the student body, a variety of courses are offered.&nbsp;Classes consist of co-educational activities geared to all skill levels. All physical education courses meet on alternate days for a full year except dance classes which meet daily. All pupils registered in the schools of New York State are required by NYS Education Law to attend classes of instruction in physical education.&nbsp;One course must be taken in each of the grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 to earn the two credits required for graduation. An adaptive program will be offered for students with I.E.P.’s. Failure of any course (9, 10, 11 and 12) mandates repeating Physical Education during summer school or the next school year.&nbsp;&nbsp; All 9th and 10th grade students must enroll in General Physical Education, Dance, Aquatics or Advanced Aquatics. Each 11th and 12th grade student must choose an elective AND an alternate course in case his/her first choice cannot be scheduled.&nbsp;No request for change in a Physical Education course will be accepted if a student has been successfully scheduled for either his/her first choice or alternate.

Hello, my name is Shai Fisher, Supervisor of the Health Department.

I want to first welcome all incoming 9th graders and their parents to the healthiest department here at Syosset High School, 

Here at the high school the Health Department curriculum is committed to promoting positive physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being for

our students to assist them toward increased health literacy.

Our goal is for them to use this information in ways that will increase their knowledge, skills, and beliefs to allow them to obtain

an optimal quality of life and well-being.

The program and courses offered are designed to educate students in healthy decision-making and risk reduction through lectures, discussions,

community involvement, activities, speakers, multimedia, and computer research.

We are very lucky to offer Peer Educators as an elective to our 9th graders.

The Peer Educators class is the first of the four-year Peer Leadership program at the high school.

This special class helps students transition from middle to high school more easily. 
Students are extensively trained in communication, public speaking,

be a peer mentor, and are asked to help lead their grade in school activities within any of our school buildings.

Something to think about long term as you consider navigating through the health electives include Community Health,

Exercise Physiology, and Introduction to Health Professions.

All courses not only offer excellent career pathways, but also provide multiple opportunities for community service, which greatly assist

Students can also choose, and are encouraged to participate in, any of our community service based after-school clubs, including Interact,

the PRO (Peers Reaching Out Club) and Serendipity Club.

HOW CAN PARENTS PREPARE THEIR CHILD WITH A DISABILITY WITH THE TRANSITION FROM MIDDLE SCHOOL TO HIGH SCHOOL? There are steps families can take towards the independence needed for high school, postsecondary education, and employment. As children enter high school and prepare for college and beyond, there is an increased expectation that they will be able to manage and complete their schoolwork independently. This can be a challenging transition for some families. Here are some steps you and your family can take:

PREPARING FOR HIGH SCHOOL Determine what skills and activities your child is motivated to do independently. · Ask your child, “Are there activities at school or at home that your teachers or I help you with that you wish you could do by yourself?” Think ahead to high school and beyond and consider skills your child needs to learn. · Ask yourself these questions, “When is my child is preparing for high school and later for postsecondary education, what are the activities he or she will need to do independently? What skills will s/he need to do those activities successfully?” Encourage your child to take greater ownership in their IEP and assure them you are there to support them. · Your child’s independence and involvement in their own education is guided by your parental support and encouragement. It is important that your child find their own voice when it comes to advocating for their needs. · Explain to your child what an IEP is and why they have one. · Help your child visualize the future and explain why building their independence now will help later on. · Encourage your child to articulate their modifications and accommodations to their teachers. · Encourage your child to attend their IEP meetings.

CPR Junior and senior students will complete training in adult/child CPR and first aid.&nbsp;They may receive certification upon successful completion of this unit of study. This class will receive instruction for a period of ten (10) days, and this training will be part of their regular physical education class.&nbsp;Cost for certification card is $25.00.

WELLNESS&nbsp;ADVISORY The Wellness Advisory Program is a portion of the General Physical Education curriculum that teaches students healthy lifestyle habits. Students will receive instruction twice a month dealing with the following topics: nutrition,&nbsp;stress management,&nbsp;coping skills, communication skills, body image,&nbsp;peer pressure issues, HIV/AIDS,&nbsp;drug and alcohol prevention, CPR,&nbsp;relaxation techniques,&nbsp;cyberbullying, mental health, and how the choices they make affect lifestyle diseases.

WHICH COURSES MEET THE 1 CREDIT GRADUATION REQUIREMENT? There is a graduation requirement of one credit in one of The Arts. To fulfill that requirement through the Art Department a student must take Studio in Art for one credit, or any two of the following half credit courses: Foundations in Art I, Foundations in Art 2, Crafts, Computer Art, Digital Photography, Photo 1, or Art History. The half credit courses do not need to be taken in the same year. This same combination of courses is also one of the requirements for Graduation Honors in Art. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STUDIO IN ART AND FOUNDATIONS 1 AND 2? The combination of Foundations in Art 1 and 2 (half credit each) are equal in content to Studio in Art (one full credit). Depending on their priorities, students may only be able to fit a half credit of art into their schedule at a given time. Studio in Art is an introductory course that will prepare students for many of our more advanced courses. In Foundations in Art 1, students will primarily create two-dimensional work and in Foundations in Art 2, students will focus on three-dimensional work. The Foundations courses can be taken in any order. The curricula of both Foundations courses are equal to the one Studio in Art course. AM I ABLE TO TAKE BOTH MUSIC AND ART IN THE SAME YEAR? Yes, and many students do. Creating a high school schedule is all about establishing priorities. Students often find that they cannot take everything they want to take, so they must prioritize. Taking a full-credit course in both music and art is difficult in 9th grade, but not impossible. It becomes easier as students move to higher grades. The Art Department offers many half-credit courses that are easier to combined with a full credit in music. ARE THERE ANY COURSES WITH PREREQUISITES? Yes, most of the more advanced art courses require skill sets that are established in previous courses. For example, Painting has a prerequisite of either Studio in Art or Foundations 1 and 2. The reason for this is that students will not only learn the basics of painting in the preliminary courses, but they will also develop a deep understanding for the elements of art and the principles of design which are necessary for success in the painting class. ARE THERE ART CLUBS? Yes, there are several art clubs. They include: Mural Club, Photo Club, Olympics of the Visual Arts, Yearbook Club, Stage Construction Club and National Art Honor Society. WHAT IS THE NATIONAL ART HONOR SOCIETY? National Art Honor Society is a recognized national honor society overseen by the National Art Education Association. Students in National Art Honor Society participate in school, local and global community service through the visual arts. Students must be enrolled in a visual arts art course each year of membership, and earn the yearly required points/credit towards annual induction and senior graduation cords.
