A cool mass of air moves into a temperature zone. A blizzard is formed when hot air and cold air comes together. During a blizzard temperatures are well below zero.
It is usually white outside during a blizzard so people can not see where they are going. During blizzards there is snow covering everything, high winds and ice making it hard for people to get around.
In order for a storm to be called a blizzard winds need to be blowing at 35 miles per hour.
How are blizzards measured?
Meteorologists measure the amount of falling snow by looking at the number of inches and feet of snow. Temperatures are measured using a thermometer. Meteorologists use weather radar and satellites to measure and track major storms.
First Hand Experiences
In 1978 a big winter storm hit Boston Massachusetts. Some people left their cars in the middle of the roads. Some people had to stay at work because the roads were not clear and safe to drive. The storm of 1888 many people died including farm animals.
Prevention and Safety
To stay safe during a blizzard you should wear layers of clothing so you don't get frostbite and hypothermia. Most people used to use animal skin to keep warm during a storm. Now we have thicker and warmer clothes.
