Fareeda was an intelligent, happy and pretty little girl. She went to Sunmarke School, which she loved. Her teacher Ms Thomason was so kind and she had lots of friends in Year 2.

It was June and nearly the summer holidays. Ms Thomason sat all the boys and girls down and explained that they would be going to Year 3 in August.

After their circle time all the boys and girls went off to have lunch and play outside. But Fareeda didn't want to play. She didn't want to eat. She didn't want to talk to her friends. Fareeda couldn't stop thinking about what Ms Thomason had said.

I don't want a new teacher. I don't want to leave my friends. I don't want a new classroom.

Fareeda had tears in her eyes, her lip was trembling. It didn't feel nice. Fareeda didn't know what to do.
Ms Thomason saw the look on Fareeda's face.

You don't look yourself. How are you feeling Fareeda?

I have a weird feeling. It's not nice. I don't know how I am feeling. My eyes are watering and my lip is moving. I am shaking a little as well.

Ms Thomason discussed the Zones of Regulation with Fareeda. She identified that she was feeling sad. She suggested that Fareeda talk to her friends and parents about the transition.

Fareeda went home that day and spoke to her mum and dad about how she was feeling. She told them she was upset about leaving her friends and teacher.
Her mum explained that she would still see her friends at break times and that she would make lots of new ones. She could also go and visit Ms Thomason whenever she wanted. Fareeda started to feel a bit better.

The next day Fareeda's friend told her that she was moving back to Egypt and would be leaving Sunmarke. Fareeda started to frown, she clenched her fists and shouted at her friend.

"How could you leave me? This is so unfair" shouted Fareeda.

How do you think she was feeling?

Fareeda idenitifed that she was feeling angry. She wondered what she could do to help her calm down.

Fareeda decided to ask Ms Thomason for some time out. She listened to calming music and meditated outside with her friends.

Now I feel much calmer.

After the summer holidays, Fareeda was ready to go back to school. She put on her uniform, charged her device, made her lunch and packed her bag. When she got to school her mum and dad took her to the grand staircase. But...she got a funny feeling in her tummy.

How do you think she was feeling?

Fareeda identified that she was feeling nervous. Her mum explained that some of her friends would be in her class and that it is normal to feel nervous. There were lots of lovely teachers to help Fareeda to the classroom which made her less nervous.
