FRIDA KHALO
by Denisa Anghelache
Frida Kahlo was born in Coyoacán, a village beyond the outskirts of Mexico City on July 6, 1907. Her father was Guillermo Kahlo Kaufmann, a German photographer, while his mother was Matilde Calderón y González (1876-1932), a wealthy Mexican of Spanish and Amerindian ancestry. Frida was a painter with a troubled life. She liked to say that she was born in 1910 since she deeply felt like a daughter of the Mexican revolution.
A terrible event marked her life forever, on September 17, 1925, when, at the age of 18, leaving school, she boarded a bus with Alejandro to go home and a few minutes later he was the victim of an accident caused by the vehicle on which she was traveling and a tram. The consequences of the accident were very serious for Frida: she underwent 32 surgical operations. Discharged from the hospital, she was forced to rest in bed at home, with a bust in plaster.
