Spotlight - Student Council

These are words straight from our President, Jadyn Piccolo!
“The Student Council is doing many things. Some of the events the Student Council has done in the past are hard to do now because of COVID. We are trying to figure out how to put together fundraisers and other fun events throughout the school year that are COVID safe. The Student Council is about making the school a fun place to be. We do a lot of fundraisers to make that happen. All of the money collected from the fundraisers is put into each grade's treasury and that will help towards the funding of field trips. My goal for this school year is to put on as many events as possible because for the past two years we have not been able to do much because of all the COVID restrictions. Some inspiring words would be to make the best out of the situation you are in because many things have been rough for everyone lately, and if every makes it the best we can, we can still have a good time. If anyone has any ideas, please reach out to the Student Council Board.”

Winter Sports

The winter sports season was full of excitement with girls and boys basketball and cheer. We demonstrated lots of team spirit!
Girls Cheer: These amazing girls have defeated all odds this season, even the mask mandate that made it harder to perform. They cheered their hearts out at every game and ranked second in the Cheer Madness competition!
Boys Basketball: These boys have been working super hard. Ending the season with an impressive record: league 10-3, overall 16-6, and Tri-County Runners-Up. Way to go our 8th grade athletes: Brandon Dyer, Connor Dempsey, Gabe Johnson, Jack Welch, Kosta Vorias, and Ryan Bonilla.

What's Happening

Winter Concert

Robotics Club cont.

The CMS Winter Concert took place on Wednesday, December 15, 2021. Led by our amazing choral and band directors, Mrs. Vanderhoek and Mr. Davini, the chorus and band performed four concerts that day. The Cawley Chorus sang The Star Spangled Banner, Light, and Christmas on Broadway. The Cawley Concert Band performed Twist and Shout and High Hopes. It was an amazing opportunity to showcase the musical talents of the students of Cawley.

Hawk of the Month

Each month students are recognized for displaying the character traits for the monthly word. The following are the Hawk of the Month words:

Do you enjoy seeing all the creative Doodles on the Google homepage? Have you wanted to create your own Doodle for Google? This is your opportunity! The national competition of creating a “Doodle for Google,” has opened for entries. The deadline is March 4, 2022. Information regarding rules and how to enter can be found on the Doodle For Google Site.

This is a great opportunity to show your creativity and possibly win some prizes. If you have any questions or need assistance, please see Mrs. Meyer in the computer lab room 122.

Answers: 1. True, 2. True, 3. 2003

Ingredients:
1 cup prepared tortilla masa
2 cups milk, divided
5 cups water, divided
1 cinnamon stick
1 Mexican chocolate
6 ounces sugar or 1½ piloncillo, grated

1) In medium mixing bowl, blend masa with 1 cup of water
2) Add a second cup of water gradually
3) Heat the remaining water in a medium saucepan
4) Once the water is boiling, lower to medium heat and add cinnamon stick, chocolate and sugar or piloncillo
5) When the chocolate is dissolved and starts to boil, add masa mixture and stir constantly to avoid lumps and to keep from sticking to the bottom of the pot
6) Lower heat to medium and continue stirring until masa is cooked (30 minutes)
7) Add the milk and stir for 5 more minutes
8) Use a molinillo to finish your atole (it adds foaminess and will remove any lumps of masa that might remain)

An Interview with Mr. Fleury & Peche

This is an interview with the 6th grade science teacher for Team Yale, Mr. Fleury, and his class pet, a lizard named Peche.
How old is Peche?
I got Pêche this summer. He is less than a year old.
What type of lizard is Peche?
He is a peach-throat monitor lizard. That’s why his name is Pêche. Pêche is the French word for “peach.” He will be about four feet long when he is fully grown. Peach-throat monitors are meat eaters from Asia. They like warm, damp areas with lots of trees to climb and water to swim in.
Have you had any other pets in the past?
Yes, I have had at least one dog ever since I was two years old. The greatest number of dogs I ever had at once is four! I had three huge iguanas and a Savannah monitor lizard when I first started teaching. I used to have a rough- neck monitor named Fuego, but he died the summer after the current eighth graders left sixth grade.
Now for a question about you. When did you start teaching?
I started teaching in 1993 at
Hooksett Memorial School which
used to be the middle school before
Cawley was built in 2003. I had my
iguanas and Savannah monitor in
my classroom back then.

This is an interview with the food services staff. I got to interview two of them at once and here is a combination of their responses:

What is the biggest challenge in your job?
We are short staffed so this restricts the amount of options we can offer. We also are having a hard time procuring food due to the supply chain issues since the pandemic has started.
How do you decide what meals to serve?
We have guidelines through the USDA we must follow, from there we interview students on what they would like to see in their lunchrooms . As long as they can be modified to fit the guidelines we’ll put it on our menu . We also look at the popular choices our students are already choosing.
Are there certain days of the week when more students buy lunch?
Breakfast at lunch days are the biggest! Friday’s are pizza days so that’s the second busiest day. The days we run chicken tenders , nuggets or chicken patty is in third place.

We are very thankful for all that our lunch staff do for us here at Cawley Middle School, and we appreciate their work. They are a hardworking crew that has been struggling under the pressure of being short-staffed. We would like to give our shout-out to Cawley Middle School’s food services staff!
