Mrs. Ward, 7th grade Science

We have four people retiring this year. They have been working in our Hooksett community and with Cawley for quite some time. We all appreciate them and what they have done for the school. Mrs. Ward, 7th grade Science teacher, Mrs. Whitcher,8th grade Social Studies, Mrs.Gonthier, Special Ed teacher, and Mrs. Polak, the Assistant Superintendent, are retiring. We are grateful and appreciate everything these people have done for our school and the Hooksett community. We hope that they enjoy their retirement for many, many years to come.

Mrs. Ward said she is looking forward to waking up later, “I want to spend more time with my family, including my two grandsons.” She says, "she will go golfing, hiking, and exploring the world." Her favorite memory is the relationship she has with students and staff, and “not any one particular event.” She will miss the research and creative thinking used for planning classroom lessons. After working here for 22 years we are grateful for the time she has dedicated to this school.

Ms. Whitcher plans to be golfing and spending time with family and friends, but also coming back and subbing sometimes. She says, “At the end of all my classes the last thing I say to my students before I dismiss them is "adios, see ya lada, bye" I will miss saying that.” She also will miss the people she works with, being with her students in class, and seeing school events like the play, going to DC, and band and chorus concerts. Some of her favorite memories here at Cawley are, debates between students, using her hulk hands, and seeing Mr. Benson play cowbell. She has been working hard here at Cawley for 24 years.

Ms. Whitcher, 8th grade Social Studies

Mrs. Gonthier, Special Ed

Mrs. Gonthier is looking forward to having free time, and pursuing some of her other passions. She says her favorite memories are teaching Christopher, an 8th grade student, how to drive his power wheelchair, and doing STEM projects with her students. She has dedicated 14 years to our school and 28 years to teaching overall. She will miss her colleagues and seeing her students try and overcome new things.

Mrs. Polak, Assistant Superintendent

Mrs. Polak is looking forward to spending time with family and friends, especially her 7-month old grandson. She also hopes to have a more open schedule for traveling. She said “Over the years, I have made many unforgettable memories as I have walked through classes and attended theatrical performances and sporting events.” She also has made some amazing memories like watching the construction and opening of Cawley when it was built ,and watching Cawley receive the NH Excellence in Education Award for middle schools. She will miss the students, staff, and families that make up Cawley. She has been working here for 40 years.

8th Graders Visit Washington D.C.

The 8th graders went on a trip to Washington, DC on Tuesday April, 18 and came back on Friday April, 21st. There were 115 students that attended DC and 36 that stayed at Cawley. Staff from all grade levels went on the trip, Mrs. Adams, Mrs. Gartland, Ms. Warnick, Mrs. Collins, Ms. Whitcher, Ms. Gibson, Mrs. Benotti, Mrs. Tanguay, Ms. Gauvain, Mrs. Roberts, Senora. Davila-Colon, and Mrs. Rogers. The students who did not go on the trip played games, did team building activities, went bowling, saw a presentation from Squam Lake Science Center, had a zumba workout with the Zoo Workout Fitness Center, and watched the movie National Treasure.
The trip was about an 11 hour drive, though they stopped for lunch along the way. They stayed at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Georgetown. Their trip was full of things to see. There were lots of memorials that the 8th grade visited. They visited the Lincoln memorial, Vietnam Veteran Memorial, Korean War Memorial, World War 2 Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial, Roosevelt Memorial, Martin Luther King Junior Memorial, and the Jefferson Memorial. The museums they saw were the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, African American History and Culture Museum, Smithsonian Museum of American History, and the Ford’s Theater Museum. At the Ford’s Theater Museum the students watched the play One Destiny. They walked through Arlington National Cemetery, they took a guided tour of Old Town Alexandria, and they walked through the Botanical Gardens. They went to the Peterson House and the National Zoo. They also had the annual dinner cruise on the Potomac River. Finally, they went to the North Portico of the White House for photos. All the students had a lot of fun, and so did all the staff that accompanied them.

Foreign Language Fashion Show

Stock Market Game

The stock market game is a competition throughout the country where students try to make as much money as possible in 3 months by buying and selling stocks.This year, there were 436 people in the competition. Competitors get $100,000 to start with and choose to put money into stocks they’ve researched. The team of Timothy Dodd, Micheal Cheung, and Zachary Greenberg won 3rd place overall and 1st place out of the middle schools.

The Foreign Language Fashion show took place on May 10th. The foreign language classes did this to teach the students how to say all of the clothing items in another language and display their creative abilities. The students made their outfits out of innovative materials like duct tape and plastic bags. This fashion show was complete with a long red carpet which the students displayed their outfits on.

7th Grade Visits Pinkerton

Pinkerton Academy is a huge school. Not only is it the biggest high school in the state, but it’s Hooksett’s main high school to send kids to since Hooksett doesn’t have its own high school. To give students a head start, the school takes the 7th grade to Pinkerton so they can learn about the school. On the trip, the students were first shown a presentation about the school in the Stockbridge Theatre with a few students at Pinkerton as guest speakers. The speakers then led homerooms on a tour around the school to show how the buildings are used. Most groups got to go inside a few. We are very excited for when these kids go to high school!

Naming the Cawley Mascot

If you don't known yet, our mascot, the hawk, has a new name! The CMS hawk mascot's new name is Captain Hawkins. Names were recommended, and Heart of the Hawk narrowed them down to 4 finalists. They had students and teachers vote for one of the 4 names. Captain Hawkins won!

Hawks of the Month

Sea Monkey Day is a day that celebrates Sea Monkeys for how much they have helped with science. Sea Monkeys are a type of brine shrimp also known as Artemia Salina. Sea Monkeys don’t actually look like monkeys. Instead they look like shrimp. The students learned about Sea Monkeys and even got some Sea Monkeys. After Sea Monkey

Sea Monkey Day

Day, they also made a factual ad for Sea Monkeys. The 6th grade has a big celebration on May 16 which is Sea Monkey Day. The students made acrostic poems, Sea Monkey mad libs, did Sea Monkey coloring pages and word searches, made Sea Monkey crowns, took pictures as Sea Monkeys, and had cupcakes. Overall, Sea Monkey Day was a very exciting day!

Spring Concert

Memorial Day Parade

The Cawley Band and The Cawley Chorus did an amazing job for the Spring Concert! The band performed ‘Spider Man No Way Home; Main Theme’ which was written by Michael G. Giacchino, ‘Captain Marvel; Main Theme’ which was written by Pinar Toprak, and ‘Avengers’ which was written by Alan Silvestri.
And the Chorus performed ‘This is me’ is from The Greatest Showmen, written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, and arranged by Mac Huff, with soloists Ana M, Lorelei S, and Jackson H, ‘I See the Light’ is from Tangled written by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater, with soloists Sophia T, Aida O, and Bria Tremblay, then finally ‘Seize the Day’ from The Newsies, written by Jack Feldman and Alan Menken. Congratulations Band and Chorus, you all did amazing!

For Memorial Day the Cawley Middle School Band participated in a parade. They played the Grand Ol’ Flag in the parade. The parade started at Lambert Park near the Congregational Church, went across the Memorial Bridge, ending at the American Legion Hall. Many other ceremonies were part of this parade. Mr. Davini was asked what this parade was for and he replied, “Memorial Day is a day for us to reflect on the sacrifice that so many people have made for our country, specifically, those who gave their lives for us. We have parades to celebrate and honor them as a community which is also our way of supporting those who have lost someone they love to war. It is a great honor to be asked to perform and give back, in whatever way we can, to those who gave so much for us.” The band played very well at this awesome event to celebrate those who gave so much for us and our country.

Talent Show

Teacher, Nurse & Food Service Appreciation

On Friday June 2nd, the National Junior Honor Society hosted the 2023 CMS Talent Show! There were so many people who wanted to show off some of their amazing talents. There were also so many people who came to support all of the people who performed! Everyone who performed did an amazing job, but there were a few people who stood out from the crowd. The judges, Mr. Trimmer, Mr. Clark, and Mrs. Rushia picked a winner from each category and an overall winner. The winner for the instrumental category was Blake Merrow. The winner for the singing category was Aida Omerbegovic. The winner for dancing was Lauren Stowell, and the winner for the miscellaneous category was John Mrozek with his comedy act. The judges also picked an overall winner. This year’s overall winner was the dancer Isabella Polyukhovich! During intermission the National Junior Honor Society also had a bake sale to help raise money for the club. There were lots of delicious homemade treats brought in by the NJHS members and they were a huge hit. Overall, the Talent sShow was a huge success and all of the participants did a great job.

Tuesday May 9th, was a very special day for the teachers! It was Teacher Appreciation Week! For Teacher Appreciation Week, teachers were celebrated with gifts, and thank you papers on their doors. Builders Club had made/gave the teachers sunshine baskets that were filled with a lot of yellow things. Those yellow items in the basket were supplies for the teachers and some snacks as well. The items in the sunshine basket consisted of: Lays Chips, Pencils, Sticky Notes, highlighters, Goldfish, Gold Oreos, Lindor Chocolates, yellow Gatorade, and eraser caps. The teachers very much appreciated all that was done for them for their celebration week. And once again, THANK YOU TEACHERS!

National School Nurse Day was established to foster a better understanding of the role of school nurses in the educational setting which is celebrated on May 10th. We are so thankful to have such a dedicated and caring school nurse. Thank you Mrs. McCarron!

On May 10th, we celebrated Food Service Day, with our amazing lunch ladies. Students created posters and hung them around the cafeteria. Our lunch ladies make most, if not all of the amazing meals we get to eat everyday. Including the breakfast we get. Thank you to all the lunch ladies & food staff!
