8th Grade Washington DC Trip

From April 16th through April 19th, the 8th graders had the opportunity to go on a trip to Washington DC. After 10 hours traveling on the coach bus, the students arrived in D.C. late in the afternoon. The first things they saw were the Korean War Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Reflecting Pool, The Vietnam Memorial, WWII Memorial, and the students got a brief look at the Washington Monument. Wake up call on Wednesday was at 6 am and the students got a delicious meal at the Embassy Suites hotel in Georgetown. The buses picked up the students and they got to spend the morning at Arlington National Cemetery, watching the changing of the guard. Later in the day the group drove by the Iwo Jima Memorial, toured the Capitol Building, and visited the Botanical Garden, the Smithsonian American History, and the Smithsonian National History. Dinner that evening was at Carmine’s Italian restaurant and ended their day with a ghost tour of Old Town Alexandria. Wake up call on Thursday was at 6:00 am with another delicious hotel breakfast and the students boarded the buses for the FDR Memorial. They also visited the MLK Jr. Memorial before taking a group photo at the base of the Washington Monument. They went into the African American Museum before having lunch at the Hard Rock Café. They went to Ford’s Theatre and then the home where President Abraham Lincoln died. After the Ford’s Theatre they went to the Jefferson Memorial before going on a dinner cruise on the Potomac River. They got an amazing meal while getting to dance and go on the deck of the boat to have an amazing view of the city. On the final day of the trip the wake up call was at 6:30 and everyone packed up the bus and headed off to the Smithsonian Zoo where they saw lots of cool animals. Then they boarded the buses to head home and arrived home around midnight on Friday. All of the 8th graders had an amazing time and thoroughly enjoyed their trip.

Kiwanis Awards: Kara McIntyre Youth Volunteer of the Year & Mr. Gregoire Educator of the Year

Kara McIntyre, president of the Cawley Builders Club, was award the, “The Youth Volunteer of the Year” award for her hard work, integrity, and desire to persevere. Mr. Gregoire who teaches in eighth grade received the award for “The Educator of the Year” for his hard work and his incredible help to his students. They were both nominated by Mr. Benson. Kara and Mr. Gregoire had worked very hard for their awards. The two were both recognized on May 15th at Southern New Hampshire University. There was a fabulous dinner for the ceremony and a few Builders Club members attended in support of Kara and Mr. Gregoire. Keep up the great work!

Camp Mi-Te-Na

Sea Monkey Day

This year the 8th graders had the opportunity to go on a trip to Camp Mi-Te-Na. This is normally a summer camp in Alton, NH. It is an all boys camp on Half Moon Lake. However, all 8th graders, boys and girls were given the chance to go. They went for 3 days, June 5th through the 7th. They were in cabins with up to 10 people. They were accompanied by some of our Cawley staff, and the staff from the camp and staff from camp Foss, the all girls version of the camp. During this time they did lots of activities. Some of these activities were in the water while others were on land. There was boating, swimming, sports, games, high ropes courses, archery, tomahawks, and more. They had a campfire the first night and always did lots of fun activities after dinner. There was even open time for the students to hang out with friends in other cabins. During this time they could play sports, hang with friends, go on the camp's Ninja Warrior course and more. The weather was a little stormy the first day but they had beautiful weather for the rest of their trip. They enjoyed the left handed carnival- where they played games with their left hand or foot- and the lip sync battle where each cabin performed their own Taylor Swift song. Some students even did the Polar Plunge challenge on the last day where they got up early and swam in the water. It was a lot of fun for everyone. Students had an amazing time and truly enjoyed their experience. They will always remember this experience.

On May 16th, Cawley celebrated the national holiday of Sea Monkey Day. Sea monkeys (or brine shrimp) are little aquatic creatures that were popularized in the 1900. On this day, teachers do fun activities related to the topic. The activities included making sea monkey crowns, writing valenbrines, sea monkey Mad Libs, and more. Everyone had celebrated the aquatic pet in many different ways.

NJHS Talent Show

Boys LAX Community Service

What talent Cawley has, at the Cawley Middle School Talent Show 19 students showed a panel of three judges, Mr. Trimmer, Mrs. Russia, and Mr. Davini what they could do. Many students sang but other students did very different things such as dance and baton twirling. Mrs.Palmer, Mrs. Goulakos, and Savannah Clark, Kassidee Chickering & Litzy Torres Gonzalez, Violet LaRosee, Owen Delhay, Lily FItzpatrick, Alaina Spencer, Reid Hamilton, Abigail Brown, Jeanette Brown, Haylee Messier, Mr. Davini, Cyril Wakim, Cebastian Danton, Aida Omerbegovic, Adalyn Harnisch, Violet LaRosee, Saje Robertson-Loring, Isabella Polyukhovich, and Bria Tremblay performed to their best and competed hard. The winner for singing “I could fall in love” was Saje Robertson-Loring. The dancing winner, doing baton twirling to a combined number of songs, was Violet LaRosee. The instrumental winner, who created her own song on piano, was Adalyn Harnisch. Finally, the overall winners performing singing and dancing to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Bria Tremblay and Isabella Polyukhovich! Job well done to all performers and to the National Junior Honor Society for making it all possible.

On Saturday April 20th the Cawley Boys Lacrosse team participated in the Beautify Hooksett Day as an Earth Day project. These boys went to Cawley Middle School and did their community services project. Some of the players planted flowers that were donated from Osbourne in Hooksett. After they planted the flowers they picked weeds around the flower beds in front of the school. The rest of the team picked up trash on the fields, the grass areas around Cawley, the school trials and next to the school entrance on Whitehall Road. The team picked up a total of seven trash bags full of wrappers, cups, and other trash. The boys did a great job beautifying Cawley Middle School. Thank you to the boys who participated in this community service project.

Spring Concert

5th Grade Step-up Concert

The jazz band, chorus, and band concert was on May 14th. The concert was opened with the jazz band, who played Frankenstein by Edward Winter, Mercy Mercy Mercy by Joe Zawinul, and Best of Queen by Queen. There were solos in Frankenstein by Kyle Beckwith and Abby Brown. Next, the chorus performed Over the Sea to Skye by Cristi Cary Miller, Lift Me Up by Robyn Fenty, I’m Still Standing by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, and Here’s Where I stand by Micheal Gore. There were solos in Lift Me Up from Natalia Jasiukowicz and Violet LaRosse. In Here’s Where I Stand, which was their most difficult song, they had 6 soloists: Lily Fitzpatrick, Savannah Clark, Aida Omerbergovic, Shelby Ryrerson, Aubrey Senay, and Amelie Vigneau. Finally, the band closed the concert with John Williams: Movie Adventures by John Williams, Pirates of the Caribbean by Klaus Badelt, Me: ReAffirmation by Randall D. Standridge, and I’m a Believer by Neil Diamond. During Me: ReAffirmation, there were two soloists, Kyle Beckwith and Jeannette Brown. This was unfortunately the last performance for the eighth graders before they head off to high school, so they won some awards. The awards were the Directors Award and the Musicianship Award. In chorus, Jackson Hayes and Lorelei Sibona won the Directors Award and Lilah Dugas and Natalia Jasiukowicz won the Musicianship Award. In band, the Directors award was won by Jamie Godbout and Maggie McAuliffe and the Musicianship Award was won by Cyril Wakim and Emma Tilton.

The step-up concert was on June 3rd, 2024. The fifth grade musicians joined our Cawley Band and Chorus for a few hours of learning new songs, pizza, games, and fun. The purpose of this is for the fifth graders to meet our 6th and 7th graders, making their first year at Cawley a bit less intimidating, and this day was no different. The chorus learned and practiced “Don’t Stop Believin'” by Steve Perry, Jonathan Caine, and Neal Schon. The band played “Seven Nation Army” by Jack White. The Cawley Band and Chorus both did a great job and the fifth graders seemed super excited for their first day of band and chorus at Cawley.

Memorial Day

Did you ever wonder why we have the last Monday in May off? This American holiday is Memorial Day. In remembrance of soldiers that died in our nation’s battles, we dedicate one day officially. But, we can always remember those who have defended our country. How did Memorial Day start, though? Well, let’s take a peek back in time 158 years ago, after the Civil War. It was originally named Decoration Day where many decorated their loved ones’ graves with flowers. They honored every soldier, Union and Confederate, in an observance held in Columbus, Mississippi. Now, let’s come a little closer to our age, to after WWI and WWII. Memorials had been made and honored, thus in 1971, the day we now consider Memorial Day was celebrated on the last Monday in May. Ever since, we’ve set aside our last Monday of May where some still decorate graves belonging to fallen soldiers. Even the U.S. president every year places a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier where we recognize the unidentified fallen soldiers. So now you know what Memorial Day is and why we celebrate it! Maybe next year you can kick it up a notch and follow the traditions the fun facts suggest.
