The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) defines a protected area as a defined geographic area, which is designated, regulated and managed to achieve specific conservation objectives. Protected areas meet several objectives, among them are: the conservation of natural biodiversity, guaranteeing the protection of environmental services and the sustainable development of local communities. On the other hand, protected areas are important for scientific research, environmental education and the well-being of the population.
