MAPLE CLASS - OCTOBER 2020

Mr T, Caroline and Nathan have been so impressed with the 'Go-For-It Gopher' attitude in the class. With a topic of Coastline, the children have investigated natural and man-made features, maps and keys as well as the causes of erosion. The idea of erosion has been further investigated in the class through an experiment to see how different materials change (or don't) in salt water.

In Computer Science we have looked at staying safe online while using Scratch Jnr to develop skills in programming.
The Naught Red Bus and The Three Little Pigs are the stories we have used in English to develop our writing.

Maths follows the Whiterose planning and this term we have concentrated on number and place value.

SYCAMORE CLASS - OCTOBER 2020
September Birthday Celebrations
Phoebe and Isla
Sycamore class have been really busy with their learning.  We have been creative and thoughtful but most of all learning how to be a good learning partners.  Using learning partners, we are able to discuss ideas and share thinking making our ideas and understanding stronger.  We share books to help us develop our reading, listening and fluency skills.  We take turns becoming the teacher and the pupils.
This week Sycamore have been going bats!!!!  Well we have been using our cutting skills to make little bats.  We had to be really careful to follow the instructions and draw on friendly faces, so we didn’t scare anyone.  Look at our photos to see just how cute they are.
In Mathematics we have looked at adding tens to numbers as well as using the greater than and less than signs.  Test us at home to see if we can still remember how to use them.
In our Science lessons we have been exploring water in the coastline unit. We have experimented with objects predicting, then testing to see if they sink or float. We also created our own sea-in-a-bottle. 5 weeks ago we put 6 different materials in the bottles and each week have been observing them. Ask the students in Sycamore how we made it like an ocean in the bottle. This week we will open them and see how the materials have changed.
In Literacy, we’ve been looking at the story of The Three Little Pigs. We used story maps to help us retell the story and did some drama to support our learning of it. We looked at the characters in the story then created our own innovated versions. We’ve done new story maps and have used them to retell our own stories. We’ve got characters from robots to unicorns and everything in between! We thought about exciting adjectives we could use to describe them too.
In Geography we’ve been looking at maps and the coastline. We’ve seen how the keys on maps work and last week we created posters about coastal erosion.
In RE we’ve been thinking about friendships and have looked at stories from different religions to support our understanding.

HAZEL CLASS - OCTOBER 2020

This October, our journey into the time of the dinosaurs is coming to an end. Over the course of the term we have worked as a team of Palaeontologists to dig up dinosaur bones and have explored the idea of extinction. We learned all about the Dodo and ideas about why this friendly bird might have become extinct. There have been lots of opportunity to develop our writing and we have been really pleased with the progress that our children have made. We have been writing our own stories based on our Harry and his Bucket of Dinosaurs and learning about all the ingredients to make a perfect sentence. Thank you to the children and families in Hazel class for their hard work this half term in helping us to have such a great start back to school.

Communication
During this half term, we would like to thank all of the children for their amazing work focusing on communication and developing respectful speaking, listening and turn-taking skills. Please see the great shot of a finger puppet show being performed by Charlie for his friends as an example of communication activities in Hazel Class
Outdoor learning
The children in Hazel class have been working with Matt Thomas in the woods every Tuesday and have developed their team-work creativity and understanding of the natural environment. We hope you enjoy looking at the sculptures created during a creative art session with air dry clay.
Golden Ticket Winners
Congratulations to all of our Golden Ticket Winners from this half term. Junior, Sully and Rex are the winners in Hazel Class so far and September birthday celebrations, Happy Birthday to Jacob B and Jacob C
Maths
We have been exploring number and place value this term and have enjoyed showing bigger and smaller numbers in different ways during our investigations.
Dinosaur Facts
We have been learning about herbivores and carnivores in our dinosaur topic and exploring ideas around extinction. Here is a shot of some of the children exchanging facts about dinosaurs on our topic table.
Writing
We are working hard to catch up on our writing skills this half term and we would like to thank all families for their support in regularly reading with their children. This has really helped our children to develop their ideas for stories and their phonological awareness. Here is an image of two of our superstar writers starting their writing activities at the start of the day and a copy of a story written by class author and pupil Emma C.
ROWAN CLASS - OCTOBER 2020
This half term we have enjoyed our topic on Dinosaur Planet! We have learnt lots of interesting facts about dinosaurs, looked at thier diets and where they might have lived. We have been palaeontologists digging in the soil to find dinosaur bones and have created some stunning pieces of art! This term has been so much fun, but I am sure you will agree with me, we are all very much looking forward to a well-deserved break over half term! Thank you Rowan class for always putting a smile on my face and being little rays of sunshine every day!

This half term we have really focused on the children's personal, social, emotional health. We wanted children to come back feeling safe and secure and reform bonds with their friends and adults in the school. We introduced continuous provision for this half term for all our year 1 children and have really seen the impact it has had in making children feel ready to learn in a safe, secure and nurturing environment.

As mathematicians, we are coming to the end of our unit on place value. We have used lots of concrete manipulatives to get the children engaged and build on their prior knowledge and extend them with exciting challenges! We have had races to understand ordinal numbers. We have filled the playground with chalk numbers to work on our number formation. We have drawn number lines and used our bodies to hop up and down them to show where numbers are.

As writers this half term, we have been making fact files about dinosaurs using adjectives. We have been learning the story "Harry and his Bucketful of Dinosaurs" and this week we have made our own changes to the story to create our own story! Rowan class have been working really hard on thier presentation in thier books, and how to form sentences correctly. We are so proud of you for working so hard!
Happy birthday to our birthday stars:
Logan, Isaac, Alexis, Tommy and Ryan.
Hope you have a restful and enjoyable half term lovely Rowans! You have all been so amazing this half term and we are all so proud of you!

OAK CLASS - OCTOBER 2020
Golden Ticket Winners
Oak Class have been having lots of fun learning the stories of Dear Zoo and We're going on a bear hunt! We have been making story maps and retelling the stories using actions. We went on a bear hunt outside and squelched in the mud, went through the icy cold river and found a bear with 2 goggly eyes and a shiny wet nose!
We have been listening to our All about me boxes from home and finding out about each other as we make new friends. We are just moving onto our new topic of "What's in the sky?" Oak class have had lots of great ideas for what they want to learn about, from stars to the Sun, to rockets and vehicles that fly.
We are reading the story of Whatever Next and are looking forward to making our own inventions with cardboard boxes! Our outdoor area has been so much fun! We now have lots of new and amazing things to explore in our new maths, writing, sand and reading sheds! We have been exploring and problem solving with our water tunnels, ramps, mud kitchens and sand pit.
We have now had 4 weeks of Read, Write Inc phonics and are enjoying our new skills of reading and writing both inside and outside. After half term we will be starting our new phonics groups (details of this are on your child's Tapestry account). Finger fit has been keeping us busy each day as we cut, stick, draw and write new things to take home each day. We can't wait to see what fun learning next half term brings. Please upload any half term fun as well as everyday learning onto your child's Tapestry account. Kind regards from Mrs G and Jo.
