A master of ceremonies (also known as an MC or emcee) is the official host for a staged event, performance, or party. Normally, a master of ceremonies introduces speakers, makes announcements, and engages with the audience to keep the event agenda flowing as smoothly as possible.
The difference between an MC and a host is a host's role is very similar to that of an MC, but a host is more frequently associated with persons who have more time on the stage/event and are on the more entertaining side, rather than being very official (like an MC for a very formal event, for example).
Some important qualities for an MC and host include a friendly disposition, a sense of humor, promoting skills, the ability to put people at ease, and the ability to improvise. Also, because anything can happen at an event, an MC or host should be able to react to emergencies quickly.
The MC or host should be well organized so there are no last-minute hitches that could affect the event. A great event host will have done their research beforehand, know the purpose and goals of the event as well as be well aware of the timings, the structure of the evening, and the role they will be playing.
This short course will prepare you to be a better MC and host for events in English. Happy learning, PunggawaKU!
