A Ghost Story

He heard a sound that sounded like a scream. It seemed far away but he knew it was in the room with him.

Every sound scared him. He couldn't see a thing in the darkness.

He heard it again. It was in the corner near the floor.

They peeked out from around those old, Arkansas trees.

And this was not a little swamp shack. It was a mansion of a house!

And trees, they grow them big in Arkansas.

He heard it again. It was in the other corner of the room, up by the ceiling!

And then, something stabbed him. Right...

It was in the center of the room, coming at him!!

This book was illustrated by students from the Downsville Central School's 1st and 2nd Grade classes.

It was created as part of a Box Of Light online assembly.

The moon above was full and shone with a ghostly light upon the house.

(And beds, they grow them big in Arkansas.)

Soon, they were asleep. No, that's not completely true.

(Cause mosquitos, they grow them big in Arkansas.)

They did not like the feeling of that house.

They snuck up to the fence and waited for dogs to chase them away. But no dogs came.

About the time of the Civil War, two Northerners were caught in battle. They were thrown into a Confederate prison.

(And prisons, they grow them big in Arkansas.)

They stayed there long enough to know they did not like it. So they decided to sneak out and head back north.

 (And swamps, they grow them big in Arkansas.)
