Health promotion refers to the process of enabling people to increase control over and improve, their health. Health promotion is vitally important as it can lead to the reduction of premature deaths. I agree that health promotion is important as it creates both awareness and conscientization that leads to disease prevention, control of health situations and proper usage of health services and facilities. Health promotion focuses on behavioural change, socio-economic lifestyles and the physical environment (Hymel et al.,2011).

The aim of health promotion is to help an individual or group reach a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. It involves an individual or group identifying and understanding aspirations, satisfying needs, and changing with the environment (Hymel et al.,2011).

Health promotion has seven principles which include non-maleficence, beneficence, health maximization, efficiency, respect for autonomy, justice and proportionality (Hymel et al.,2011).

What are the benefits of health promotion?
There are numerous benefits to having effective health promotion as an individual or in a group which includes the empowerment of individuals to make healthier beneficial choices. Individuals making healthier choices such as a change in diet, partaking in regular exercise and avoiding poor lifestyle habits such as smoking can improve their overall health and well-being (Whitehead ,2006).
Benefits of workforce health promotion for an organization include a well-managed health and safety program, a positive and caring image, improved staff morale, reduced staff turnover, reduced absenteeism, increased productivity, reduced healthcare and insurance costs and reduced risks of fines and litigation (CDC ,2017).
Benefits of workforce health promotion for an employee include a safe and healthy work environment, enhanced self-esteem, reduced stress, improved morale, increased job satisfaction, increased skills for health protection, improved health and improved sense of well-being (CDC ,2017).
Benefits of mental health promotion can include the improvement of physical health and well-being, prevention and reduce the risk of mental health problems, improve mental health services and the way of life, assisting in recovery from mental health problems, strengthening the capacity of communities, reduce vulnerability to socio-economic stressors, increase mental health literacy and the improvement of health at work (Whitehead ,2006).
Benefits of health promotion in the community include capacity building, raising awareness of the link between diet and health, encouragement of healthy eating and improved diets, and supporting individual and community lifestyle changes to improve health and community empowerment (Whitehead ,2006).

Factors and challenges influencing health promotion
Many challenges are faced that could influence health promotion which includes poor definitions of the expected health outcomes, ambiguous elaboration of factors and conditions to be targeted in health promotions, the ambiguity of health promotion policies and guidelines, lack of capacity to develop and implement health promotion programmes, a general context of inadequate investment in health promotion, underdeveloped sectoral collaboration and low political will and commitment to health promotion programmes as well as institutional corruption and resource management (Jahan ,2012).
Factors that influence health promotion include culture, religion, age, gender, literacy and accessibility to modern technology. The concept of health promotion changes over time and varies according to different cultural, religious and spiritual perceptions of the community.
There are numerous cultures where men and women have different roles and responsibilities that are assigned to them. In specific cultures, the woman is seen as the primary caretaker of the family and to fulfil this role she would need to give up some of her preferences. There is a large increase in the complexity and technologically sophisticated health care system, health literacy problems are also magnified. Recent advances in technology have caused the merging of cultural perspectives and the emergence of new ideas of health and illness, resulting from a combination of pre-existing and new concepts (Jahan ,2012).
