Information from Energy Education

An incandescent light bulb or incandescent lamp is an electric light that has a copper filament that's heated until it glows. To guard the filament against corrosion, it is surrounded by a glass bulb with a vacuum. And wires are installed in the glass to provide dc input to the filament.

Henry Woodward, a medical student, and Mathew Evans, a hotel employee, were neighbors who called themselves amateur scientists. A battery and an induction coil were among the components they tested with. They noticed a flame at the coil's contact area one evening in 1873 at midnight. According to one story, Evans pulled out his watch and was shocked when he noticed he could see quite enough to tell the time by the light of the spark. Woodward yelled something along the lines of "My!" according to another report published in the Canadian Electrical News and later referenced in a 1991 Star piece. What an invention we'd have if we could only put that in a globe of some sort! It would be a world-changing event!"
