Emmeline Goulden was born on the 14th or 15th July 1858 in Manchester. She grew up in a politically active family. In 1879 she married a lawyer called Richard Pankhurst. In 1889 she founded the Women's Franchise League. In October 1903 she helped founding the more militant Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), which participants were called suffragettes. Emmeline was arrested many times and she went on hunger strike herself, resulting in violent force-feeding. In 1913, the government adopted the "Cat and Mouse" act because of many hunger strikes. On the 14th June 1929 she died shortly after women were granted equal voting rights with men.
