Queen Elisabeth II

Elisabeth II, born April 21, 1926 in London, is Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland as well as fifteen other sovereign states, called Commonwealth Kingdoms, and their territories and dependencies. She is also the head of the Commonwealth, an organization of fifty-three states.

On November 20, 1947, she married Philip Mountbatten, Prince of Greece and Denmark, with whom she had four children: Charles, Prince of Wales, Anne, Princess Royal, Andrew, Duke of York and Edward, Earl of Wessex.

When her father George VI ascended to the throne in 1936 following the abdication of his brother Edward VIII, she became, at the age of 10, the heir apparent to the British Crown.

She acceeded to the British throne on February 6, 1952 at the age of 25. His coronation, on June 2, 1953, was the first to be broadcast on television. She became the sovereign of seven independent states of the Commonwealth: South Africa, Australia, Canada, Ceylon, New Zealand, Pakistan and the United Kingdom

The Duke of Cambridge (Prince William) is the second in line to the throne and the elder son of The Prince of Wales and Diana, Princess of Wales. His Royal Highness is married to The Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine, with whom he has three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. The family's official residence is Kensington Palace. His Royal Highness undertakes a number of charitable activities and projects and carries out public and official duties in support of The Queen, in the UK and overseas.

Political role of the royal family

The family carries out over 2000 official engagements through the UK and worldwide. Engagements include state funerals, national festivities, garden parties, receptions, and visits to the Armed Forces and represents the Queen and the nation in Commonwealth or other countries.

The Queen remains the head of British state, the highest representative of the United Kingdom. The head of the British government, however, is the Prime Minister. They have a special relationship, retaining the right to appoint and also meeting with him or her on a regular basis. She regularly gets information on all important national matters, but never publicly participates in political debates and not one final decision is up to her.

So in conclusion: the royal family doesn't have any political role in Great Britain or the Commonwealth, but is some sort of charity

Lady Diana was born on July 1st, 1961 and died on August 31st 1997. She was the wife of Prince Charles of Wales, and the mother of William and Harry.

On February 28th, 1996 Diana agreed to get divorced of the Prince of Wales, because of infidelities.

On August 31st, 1997, Lady Diana died in a car accident in Paris. In the accident died also her lover, Dodi Al-Fayed and his driver.

In 1999, a French judge concluded that the accident was caused by the driver of the vehicle Henri Paul, who after having consumed alcohol and antidepressants lost control of the car while accelerating to avoid the paparazzi.

Famous pubs in London

In the capital of England, there are so many pubs in the city. The culture of the pub is really anchored among the English, because a lot of people go there after work, with friends, to spend some good time...

But what is a pub ? What is the difference between a bar and a pub?

A pub is a place like a bar where you can eat and drink, of course, and spend some time with the activities which are proposed. You can for example play billards, play darts, watch TV... This is a true place of life where you can spend some good time with friends.

You can find some very original themed pubs like the Sherlock Holmes pub (here on the right) or the Churchill arms (down here). The Chuchill arms is one of most beautiful pub in London with some flowers all the year, and of course it pays homage to Winston Churchill, the prime Minister of England during the Second World War.

For the Sherlock Holmes pub, this is a pub about the famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. In this place, there is a room about the famous character with some old stuff.

Fun fact: If you go to London during the end of year celebrations, you can see the Churchill arms pub with some beautiful decorations and little Christmas trees
