West Port High School is a satellite campus of the College of Central Florida. West Port High School offers highly motivated students the unique opportunity to earn their Associate of Arts degree while attending high school on the West Port High School campus. Courses are taught by West Port High School teachers who are Adjunct Professors at the College of Central Florida. Students taking Early College courses have the opportunity to attend college at no cost. Our dance program provides instruction in a variety of dance styles including:&nbsp; -Ballet&nbsp; -Modern&nbsp; -Jazz&nbsp; -Tap&nbsp; -Hip-hop&nbsp; Students will perform in dance concerts at WPHS and the local community.

These ensembles focus on a wide variety of&nbsp; contemporary music genres such as Rock, R&amp;B, Blues, and Country.&nbsp; Emphasis is given to the skills necessary to becoming a music&nbsp; professional,&nbsp; both in live performance and in the recording studio.

West Port High School offers 21 Advanced Placement (AP) courses for students to choose from, as well as honors courses for many subject areas. AP courses are rigorous courses that high school students can take, and if they pass the AP exam at the end of the year, students may get college credit for that course. Students should check with the college or university they plan to attend to see what courses and scores the school will accept.

The West Port High School Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Biomedical Science Program is a sequence of courses aligned with Career and Technical Education (CTE) national learning standards.&nbsp;The program follows a hands-on, real-world problem-solving approach to learning. Working with the same tools used by professionals in hospitals and labs, students collaborate on complex tasks to find solutions to problems. Biomedical Science students learn to analyze current medical articles, design original experiments and collaborate with their peers to solve real-world scenarios. TV production students participate in a variety of television studio activities including script writing, lighting, shooting, directing, electronic news gathering, and field production.&nbsp; Students are responsible for producing a weekly broadcast for the student body.

MCCA is proud to host Marion County’s only high school string orchestra which performs throughout the county. Classical, contemporary, and musical theatre scores are studied and performed throughout the year.&nbsp;Both advanced and beginning players are encouraged to audition for the school’s orchestra program.

In the Global Logistics Program, students will experience a working warehouse environment to learn the full range of skills in the supply chain industry that will enhance their employability and value. Students will participate in projects and field trips to local businesses developing relationships with industry leaders.

Guitar students study many genres of music including classical, show tunes, rock, and jazz.&nbsp; Students learn how to play all styles of music using proper technique.

West Port students are fortunate to have almost one hour during the day that we call ALPHA time. This is an opportunity for students to not only get lunch, but also to meet with teachers. Students can also make-up classwork, get tutoring in all subject areas, and participate in club meetings. At West Port, you can have it all!

West Port offers a variety of athletic opportunities for all students. Students must have a least a 2.0 GPA in order to participate in any sport or extracurricular activity. Students must also have a completed physical exam before they can play a sport.

Our Biomedical Program uses the latest software, advanced materials, and cutting-edge equipment to complete labs and project-based assignments such as isolating and analyzing DNA&nbsp;samples.&nbsp; Students are exposed to real-world challenges and opportunities including: environmental issues, healthcare, crime scene investigation, and learning new technology.

MCCA students may participate in a full marching band, a jazz band, and a visual ensemble.&nbsp; Students may also take courses in guitar and keyboarding.

Ballet Modern Jazz Tap Hip-Hop

The Marion County Center for the Arts (MCCA) is a visual and performing arts magnet program at West Port High School with over 800 students enrolled from within and around the county. Eleven professional artists and creative educators comprise the arts faculty, which is dedicated to students’ growth in the arts and academics. This prestigious arts program has been recognized as an Arts Achieve Model School in all four arts categories: visual art, dance, music, and theatre and has maintained the title of Florida Arts Model School for the past 15 years. West Port offers 55 clubs for students to choose from such as government, honors, special interest, and vocational program clubs. Students must have a least a 2.0 GPA in order to participate in any club or extracurricular activity. The West Port High School Performing Arts Center, or PAC, is a state of the art facility capable of seating 650 people. Our performing arts programs hold performances throughout the year that students, parents and community members can attend.

Beginning piano students as well as more advanced students are given the opportunity to study both traditional and contemporary piano repertoire.&nbsp; Students learn proper keyboard technique while studying the role of piano music in history, culture, society, and everyday life.

The MCCA acting program teaches character development, movement, voice production, script analysis, improvisation and pantomime.&nbsp; Students also learn practical skills such as writing theatre resumes and auditioning.

As students continue in the 2-D art program, they will develop painting techniques including color theory and mixing the mediums of tempera, watercolor, acrylic, and oil.

The 3-D Art program focuses on sculptural techniques and vessel building. Techniques covered such as: pinching, coiling, combination hand building, and wheel throwing.

MCCA photography students explore compositional design principles.&nbsp;&nbsp; Students also learn the fundamentals of portrait, landscape, studio photography, and digital editing.

The study of logistics exposes students to the full supply chain life cycle. Students in the program experience a working warehouse environment&nbsp;and learn the full range of skills of this profession.&nbsp; Members of the logistics class help manage the Community Assistance Program as they organize and distribute assistance to homeless and needy students and families. The choruses at WPHS consist of serious vocal students who study and perform a broad range of vocal music including classical and contemporary music. Students participate in choral competitions and represent the school in All-State Choruses.

Utilizing tablets and web resources, students create work in a digital environment as well as investigate animation and sequential art.&nbsp; It is recommended that students take Drawing 1 as either a prerequisite or a concurrent course.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) offers a variety of programs to help students prepare for careers after high school. West Port High School offers 13 CTE programs for students to choose from. Students can also take industry certification tests in these program areas which are beneficial to students when applying for jobs.

West Port High School is the home of three academic Magnet Programs as well as a Career Academy. -Marion County Center for the Arts (MCCA) -Early College Program -Biomedical Academy -Global Logistics All of these programs provide students with the experiences necessary to be successful in today’s highly competitive academic and professional atmosphere.&nbsp; WPHS realizes that the high school experience is about strengthening one’s passions as well as developing new and exciting possibilities.&nbsp;With that thought in mind, WPHS encourages students to have it all by involvement in one or more of our magnet programs as well as in our large selection of Advanced Placement (AP) classes and Career and Technical areas.

MCCA’s technical theatre program teaches scenic, costume, makeup, and lighting as well as stage management and technical direction. The focus of the technical theatre classes are the development of the collaborative skills needed to design and work in the theatre.

The three 2-D art courses are intended to give students a foundation program in drawing and painting.&nbsp; The initial course is a drawing class beginning with observational and figure drawing, followed by exploration of various painting media, techniques and subject matter.&nbsp;
