The California Gold Rush lasted from 1848 to 1855. Approximately 300,000 people immigrated to the west. They came to the west using the Oregon Trail. Many people would die on the way over. One of the most well known examples is the Donner Party. They became stranded for eleven days. In the end they ended up resorting to cannibalism.
That is only one case of a family becoming stranded or dying. This was a common occurrence on the Oregon Trail. It was a treacherous task to cross it with your wagon and family.

Traveling With Railroads
Railroads are the new exciting way to get across America. The new Trans-Continental railroad can take you from Boston to Sacramento. Their has never before been such a easy and accessible way to travel fast and in comfort. This is a remarkable feat of engineering. The train spans 1,776 miles of track. The train goes from the east to the west coast. It took six years to be built from 1863-1869. Two railroad companies built the tracks one from the east and one from the west and they met in Utah putting a golden steak in the ground to link the two railroad companies.
