Where can I get the form? You can get the form from your Local Authority, your Garda Station, Library and Post Office. You can also download the form you need from www.checktheregister.ie.

This is the City or County Council where you live. In Dublin they are: <ul><li>Dublin City Council</li><li>Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council</li><li>Fingal County Council</li><li>South Dublin County Council</li></ul>

Deadline for registering to vote Your application must be received by the local authority at least 15 days before an election or referendum.

There are lots of forms for special circumstances but the most likely one you need is ERF1.

How to Register by Form ERF1

You can register and update your details online at www.checktheregister.ie You will need: <ul><li>PPSN</li><li>Date of Birth </li><li>Eircode</li></ul> And <ul><li>Email address if you register online</li></ul>

You can use this form to: <ul><li>Register to vote</li></ul>		Or <ul><li>Update your details - with your PPSN, Date of Birth and Eircode</li></ul> <ul><li>Make any changes to your name or address</li></ul> <ul><li>If you are 16 or 17 you can pre-register and your name will be added to the register when you turn 18. </li></ul>

Check the Register

You must use this form if: <ul><li>You do not have a PPSN</li><li>You do not have an email address</li><li>You are asked to do so by your local authority</li><li>You wish to update your nationality information</li></ul>

Take your time. Read the instructions carefully. Get or make a second copy of a paper form. Use a pencil first. Then use a BLACK PEN.

Write in ‘block capitals’ - this means you should use capital letters all the time. BLOCK CAPITALS can also be called ‘capital letters’ or ‘upper case’ letters.&nbsp;

Once you have all your personal information you are ready to fill in the form. 

Write as clearly and neatly as possible.&nbsp;&nbsp; Spell names and addresses correctly.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

PPSN Your Personal Public Service Number (PPS number or PPSN) is given by the Department of Social Protection.

PPS numbers are printed on documents such as: <ul><li>Public Services Card</li><li>Medical Card</li><li>GP Visit Card </li></ul> If you do not know your PPS number, contact your Intreo Centre or local Social Welfare Branch Office and staff there can find your number for you.

How to get a Personal Public Service (PPS) Number

Write one number or letter in each space.

Your signature is in your own handwriting. It is legally binding. When you sign a form you agree that everything you have said is true. Make sure you are happy with your signature.

A person’s nationality/citizenship tells what elections they may vote in. <ul><li>Irish Citizens – All elections and referendums</li></ul> <ul><li>EU Citizens – European and local elections</li></ul> <ul><li>UK Citizens – Dáil and local elections</li></ul> <ul><li>All other – Local elections only</li></ul>

Writing the Date or Your Date of Birth Some forms ask for dates to be written in a special way. When you see dd/mm/yyyy:&nbsp;&nbsp; You need 2 numbers for each box or space for the day and month. Use a 0 before a single digit. 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09 then 10, 11, ... You need 4 numbers for the year: 1964, 2001, 2023

Writing the date Example:		dd/mm/yyyy 				14/09/2023

6 January 2023 would be written like this...

Write one number in each space on the form when writing your date of birth, your phone number or the date.

DD - means DAY, DAY MM - Means MONTH, MONTH YYYY - Means YEAR, YEAR, YEAR, YEAR

Only complete page 2 if you do not have a PPSN or are asked to do so by your Local Authority.

You need to fill in page 1 of the form. If you do NOT have a PPSN you will need page 2 completed by a witness. Page 3 and Page 4 will help you to fill in the form.

Filling in the ERF1 Form

Your details are your personal information. 

Previous name (if this applies) - BROWN

Write your First name. 									 MARY Write your Surname. This is your Last Name or Family Name. 		 SMITH

You only need to fill in this box if you have changed your name from when you first registered to vote. 

For example: Mary Brown registered to vote a few years ago. She got married and changed her name to Mary Smith. She is updating her details on the Electoral Register.

How to Find or check an Eircode

You will find your own Eircode if you put in your house, apartment or street address. Options will come up. Click on the one you want. Or click on the map.

What is an Eircode? An Eircode is an exact address for a specific place. It uses letters and numbers. Each address has one. Make sure you know your address.
