Overview.
This ebook aims to provide people who aspire to work within digital or online educational fields, with basic knowledge on the behaviourism theory related to learning, and how to manage in a way that will result in a successful transition from print to digital.
Learning outcomes.
After reading this ebook, readers are expected to:
- know what the behaviourism theory is,
- understand how to approach behaviourism in learners from a solution-based perspective,
- know the fundamental features to look out for when quality assuring an ebook, and
- know to navigate from print to digital through the analysis of the behavioural theory and quality assurance of digital resources.
Within an organisation, a department (called PASA) that has been developing print books to tertiary students for 10 years, has collaborated with the digital department to develop ebooks for the past year.

A learning knot that the department experiences, is lack of clarity and understanding of the training that the digital department provides on how to quality assure ebooks that are instructionally sound and of an optimum quality according to the department’s standards.

Consequentially, the content that PASA along with their outsourced authors and designers produce, is consequentially poor in terms of text design. This may be because they are still unable to adjust or calibrate their ways of writing in such a way that it can successfully be displayed on an online platform. The transference of information passed through digital’s training to the department may be insufficient or unclear, and because of this, they are unable to brief their authors and designers substantially.

Instructional design can be employed to the issue, by the digital department redesigning and implementing more creative but practical ways the training to PASA.
But first, PASA will need to deconstruct the department's lack of clarity, in order to identify the exact concepts of the training they do not understand and cannot apply or translate well when creating their content.

According to Western Governors University (29 May 2020, What is the behavioral learning theory?), "Behaviorism focuses on the idea that all behaviors are learned through interaction with the environment. This learning theory states that behaviors are learned from the environment, and says that innate or inherited factors have very little influence on behavior."

Behaviourism is a learning theory that could be applied to the context in order to address the issues. PASA comprises highly experienced professionals who lack the digital expertise necessary to transforming their print books to digital versions effectively. Prior to the department's collaboration with digital, they were unaware of the different systems and tools required for the development of training; their ways of developing print books are what they have been accustomed to for 10 years.

Previously, digital offered training on how to develop ebooks, through provision of detailed templates and occasional scheduled meetings with PASA.

Because behaviourism focuses on introducing new concepts or information in chunks, the digital department could apply this theory when presenting their training to PASA.

This could be done through quality assurance: assuring consistency, correctness and coherence of the content. The department could develop thorough training for the department on how to quality assure their ebook content. PASA would also need to go through the same training in order to be the intermediary and assist their authors and designers if they do not understand. In order to know whether the training is effective, feedback will be required from PASA, in order for digital to evaluate their level of understanding.

The behaviourism will be approached in the hopes of encouraging and inspiring PASA to learn and enhance their content, by stepping outside of what they know and being open and receptive to the transformation of their work.
The QR code below will direct the learner to a platform that comprises ways of how to quality assure an ebook.

In order to access the activity, open the "Camera" app on your phone and direct it towards the code. Once the link has opened and you have downloaded the app, use a Google account to sign in.

Once the above has been done, you will be able to access each category related to quality assurance, its definition as well as what to look for with regard to that particular category in relation to quality assuring a book and ensuring that it is instructionally sound.
