Example Activities

Below are two examples of activities that could be delivered through the Home Learning approach.

If your child is self isolating for a period of time, they will follow their Home Learning timetable. This will include the following methods of learning and teaching:

Teacher led instruction—’Live Lessons’
Face to face teaching giving carefully considered explanation, questioning, worked examples, modelling, scaffolding, structured discussion and feedback. Teachers address questions and misconceptions.

Collaborative and independent activities—’Self Study’
Tasks give pupils opportunities to apply knowledge and understanding from face to face and online sessions Teachers plan opportunities for pupils to work together and collaborate on online group projects. Pupils may work on a document or video presentation together. Teachers also provide pupils with independent activities which may include digital tasks and offline tasks. Teachers are available for online support.

Online direct instruction—’Webinars’
Teachers present carefully planned video and/or audio explanations as recorded sessions (asynchronous) to explain concepts and new learning. These sessions will complement and enhance activities presented face to face in school. The teacher will also be available to support learning and answer any questions.

Activity Name: Kinetic Theory

Subject: Science

How might it be used: School based lessons teaching the Physics topic ‘Kinetic Theory’. Teacher demonstrates experimental work in class, addressing pupil questions and common misconceptions during structured discussion and feedback. The video links can also be used as live lessons (synchronous), or the teacher can add voice overs for recorded sessions (asynchronous) to explain the concepts and new learning, complementing and enhancing activities presented face to face in the laboratory.
Pupils complete past paper question activities independently/collaboratively. Once completed, the WJEC mark scheme and examiners feedback is used to support learner progress.

How might it be used: A series of lessons in school introducing effective narrative writing for GCSE English Language Unit 2 followed by follow up lessons to be completed at home on the VLE on HWB. At the end of every school lesson, the teacher directs pupils on how many tasks to be completed at home in preparation for their next school lesson.

At Abersychan School, our digital learning platform is Google Classroom (which is accessed within HWB).

Each subject class has its own Google Classroom. This means that:

· all class work and learning resources can be accessed from each subject Google Classroom

· your child is able to contact each of their subject teachers to ask for help with their learning – or additional learning – when they need it

· links to any additional website can be accessed via each Google Classroom

· your child can upload their work for feedback via each subject Google Classroom.

What do I do if we cannot access HWB or Google Classroom?

Your child has been shown how to use HWB and Google Classroom in school. If they are having difficulty using the digital platform at home, they can email;

Your child should work from home, accessing class work and resources via HWB and their Google Classroom following their Home Learning timetable.
They can contact their teacher for help and upload their work through Google Classroom for each subject

In this event, your child will be issued with a Home Learning timetable to help to schedule their workload around their time at home and at school.
All learning resources will be available via HWB and Google Classroom
