We are students from small town Vinkovci from Croatia.

In our area, there is a difference between Christmas dinner and dinner on Christmas Eve. For Christmas Eve, one fasts, does not eat meat, so mostly fish is prepared. In Slavonia it is mostly river, and in Dalmatia it is sea, although the customs are changing. On that day, all the food for Christmas is prepared.

They helped us look for recipes, design menus. We cooked with them. Thank you!

The menus vary by region of the country. We have prepared traditional Slavonian specialties for you.

For the Christmas holidays, so-called dry cakes are baked - paws, stars, gingerbread, vanilla rolls. Biscuits whose main ingredients are walnuts, hazelnuts, poppy seeds and chocolate. For a better taste, grated lemon zest, pieces of orange peel, rum and cinnamon are added. Apple is an indispensable food in our region. Among the oldest recipes we find candied apples that are no longer made often, but were a real treat in ancient times. Today we make pie cakes.

1kg fish (catfish, carp) 1,3 l water 2 dcl white wine 500 g onion 2-3 clove of garlic 3 tablespoons oil 1 tablespoon red pepper 1 – 2 dried hot peppers salt and peppercorns Preparation Clean, wash and cut the fish into pieces. In a bowl of hot oil, brown the finely chopped onion. Add chopped garlic, sweet pepper, crushed chili and peppercorns and pour water over everything. Let it boil for about ten minutes. Add sliced fish, white wine and cook gently for about forty minutes without stirring, shaking occasionally. Cook the wide noodles separately.
