Activity 4&nbsp; Self – Assessment&nbsp;(Specific competence 2.4) The students solve the following task which allows them to check their comprehension: <a href="https://learningapps.org/view20983007">https://learningapps.org/view20983007</a>

Specific competences from the English language curriculum no. 3458 /09.03.2004: 1.2 Anticiparea elementelor de conţinut ale unui text pe baza titlului / unui stimul vizual; 1.5 Identificarea de informaţii cheie din texte autentice; 2.4 Completarea de formulare; 3.1 Formularea de idei / păreri pe teme de interes în cadrul unei discuţii / în mesaje de răspuns; 4. 3 Sintetizarea sub formă de schemă / notiţe a conţinutului unui text scris / mesaj oral; 1.6 Recunoaşterea organizării logice a unui paragraf / text literar.

Aims: - to develop the students’ ability to think critically and creatively; - to manifest flexibility in the exchange of ideas and teamwork in different communication situations; - to enhance the students’ reading comprehension, motivation and autonomy.

Activity 1 Lead-in&nbsp;– to engage the students in the topic and activate their language knowledge <a href="https://learningapps.org/view20982412">https://learningapps.org/view20982412</a> The students match the 12 behaviours showing high moral standards with their Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary definitions, choose three virtues they consider to be essential nowadays then compare their answers with their colleagues’. Some of them are asked to justify their choices.

Activity 2 Pre-reading/Pre-listening&nbsp;(Specific competence 1.2) The teacher tells the students that they are going to listen to a story called&nbsp;“The Two Pebbles”&nbsp;and shares a Jamboard, asking them to write a short prediction of the content/topic/message of the story based on its title.

Procedure:&nbsp; The students watch the assigned fragment of the video <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I30Xc7EOBsY">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I30Xc7EOBsY</a>&nbsp;and listen to the story (2:20 - 4:10). The teacher pauses the video and asks the Summarizer(s) to highlight the key ideas up to this point in the story. Then, the Questioner(s) will ask at least 3 questions about the selection sharing unclear facts, puzzling information etc.&nbsp;The Clarifier(s) will address the confusing parts and answer the questions by making connections with their previous knowledge/experience. The Predictor(s) will suggest what the next events in the story will be/predict the ending of the story. The students watch the rest of the story (4:10-4:56) and discuss about the “life lessons” that can be learned from it. One conclusion can be that really difficult situations can be overcome through out-of-the-box thinking as there are more options than one might think when we really use our creativity and are willing to find innovative solutions.

Activity 3 Listening/Reading Comprehension&nbsp;(group work: reciprocal teaching, to practise differentiated instruction and the student-centered approach)&nbsp; Specific competences: 4.3 – summarizing, 1.5 questioning and connecting, 1.2 predicting, 3.1 – clarifying. The students, who have practised the Reciprocal Teaching method before and know about the four strategies that are used in RT (summarizing, questioning, predicting, clarifying), are divided in groups of four, each student having one distinct role: Summarizer, Questioner, Clarifier and Predictor.
