The Inuit People of the North

The Inuit had means of transportation. Those were sleds, skin covered boats and dogs. They had a special type of home called igloo. Igloos were built with wind-blown snow. Homes were used for families, and kept them warm in the winter season.

To begin with, the Inuit live in a very harsh and cold climate due to the low temperatures they experienced in the Arctic regions of Canada, Greenland, and Alaska. To protect themselves from this extremely cold weather, they used plenty of layers of clothing. ‘Inuit’ means “people,” and the language they speak is called Inuktitut.

The Inuit tribe survived and hunted primarily fish and sea mammals such as seals, whales, caribou, walruses, oxen, and polar bears. They used all parts of the animal efficiently for food, clothes, and tools, creating tools such as spears and harpoons, and other everyday items such as parka coats, blankets, and boats.&nbsp;

Today, the Inuits are considered one of the most distributed indigenous cultures in the world. Nowadays, they live more modernly. They started working to earn money, to pay electricity and other comforts. Also, the Inuit people live in permanent houses, but some still feel that igloos make practical shelters. In the present, Inuit people mostly live on Canada. The Inuit tribe has changed a lot since they first started, but they are still a unique and complex Native American group.

Did you know that the Inuit culture began 800 thousand years ago? One fact about this amazing tribe is that they first settled in Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. The Inuit people had traditions and roles, women and men had roles. Those roles were that men were in charge of hunting and gathering and women of sewing clothes, cooking, taking care of the children and preparing food. Inuit people played traditional games.
