WELCOME & OVERVIEW

The National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE) is funded by the Department for Education and marks a significant investment in improving the provision of computing education in England.

Run by a consortium made up of STEM Learning, the Raspberry Pi Foundation and BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, our vision is to achieve a world-leading computing education for every child in England.

What the NCCE aims to achieve
The NCCE aims to improve the expertise of computing teachers from primary to KS5 – so they are able to teach the new knowledge-based computing curriculum, and the new computer science content including at GCSE and A level.

COMPUTING COMMUNITY

Subject Matter Experts
We offer fully-funded consultancy and guidance to primary schools located in Local Authority Districts 5 or 6 through a network of computing education specialists, called Subject Matter Experts. Your local expert can help you to complete a three year action plan to improve your computing offer, and identify the most appropriate CPD to upskill your staff.

CAS Communities of Practice
Communities of Practice - run by Computing at School (CAS) - are local networks of computing teachers that share expertise, resources and best practice to encourage strong and effective teaching.

Isaac Computer Science
At A level, there is a a free online platform for students and teachers to use:
·      in the classroom
·      for homework
·      for revision
There are also free teacher CPD events and student workshops that can be attended. To stay up-to-date visit the website.

Teach Computing Curriculum
A complete curriculum containing everything needed to teach computing at key stages 1 to 4, including lesson plans, slides, worksheets, homework and assessment.

SECONDARY CERTIFICATION

Certificate awarded by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT

The Computer Science Accelerator Programme is a nationally recognised and certified professional development programme designed to equip colleagues in state-funded secondary, primary and middle schools, and state-funded FE colleges, with the subject knowledge and confidence to successfully teach GCSE computer science. You're eligible if you are:

·      a trainee teacher (computing or otherwise, seeking additional specialism)
·      supply teachers that regularly teach computer science
·      returning teachers that will teach computer science
·      serving teachers at state-funded schools (computing or otherwise)

A bursary payment of up to £1800 is payable on successful completion of the programme. Once successful you can then work towards the secondary certificate to further develop your knowledge and skills.

Representing algorithms using flowcharts and pseudocode (CP420)

Improve your knowledge of algorithms to the level appropriate for GCSE teaching. Become confident in using the key building blocks of sequence, selection and iteration, and learn to apply algorithmic thinking.

Who is it for?
This course is for current or prospective teachers of GCSE computer science with some understanding of computer science fundamentals.

Prior knowledge:
You’ll need to know some basic concepts and terminology to access this GCSE-level subject knowledge enhancement. If you are entirely new to computer science, we recommend first participating in our one-day course, An introduction to algorithms, programming and data in GCSE computer science.

Computer systems - input, output and storage (CP421)

Computers take many forms, from the smart watch on your wrist to the powerful machines used to predict the weather. They all share some key features and GCSE computer science students need to have a solid understanding of what makes a computer.

Who is it for?
This course is for current or prospective teachers of GCSE computer science with some understanding of computer science fundamentals.

Prior knowledge:
You’ll need to know some basic concepts and terminology to access this GCSE-level subject knowledge enhancement. If you are entirely new to computer science, we recommend first participating in our one-day course: An introduction to computer systems, networking and security in GCSE computer science

Fundamentals of Computer Networks (CP422)

Computer networks exist all around us. During the course, you will demystify the hardware and network topologies used for data transfer between computers and help you make topic learning relevant and engaging to students. Learn how computers of all shapes and sizes are connected physically, or wirelessly, and how this arrangement affects how data is shared.

Who is it for?
This course is for current or prospective teachers of GCSE computer science with some understanding of computer science principles.

Prior knowledge:
You’ll need to know some basic concepts and terminology to access this GCSE-level subject knowledge enhancement. If you are entirely new to computer science, we recommend first participating in our one-day course, An introduction to computer systems, networking and security in GCSE computer science.

Python programming constructs: sequencing, selection & iteration (CP423)

Learn how to write code to input, process and output data, and how to manipulate data stored in variables. Using the building blocks of sequence, selection and iteration you’ll begin to understand how programs are constructed to perform a multitude of simple and more complex tasks.

Who is it for?
This course is for current or prospective teachers of GCSE computer science with some understanding of computer science fundamentals.

Prior knowledge:
You’ll benefit from having some experience of basic programming, perhaps using a block-based language, to access this GCSE-level subject knowledge enhancement. If you are entirely new to computer science, we recommend first participating in our one-day course: An introduction to algorithms, programming and data in GCSE computer science.
