What is a Cassowary?

The Cassowary is a member of a group of large flightless birds called ratites. There are 3 species of cassowary in the world. They can be found in New Guinea, Northern and Eastern Australia.

Description:

What does it Look Like?

The Cassowary look's like an odd combination of a turkey and an ostrich.
It has a large body covered in black feathers and it has bluish skin on the head and a reddish neck. Upper parts of the legs are blue while lower parts are grey in colour.
The Cassowary is a very large bird but is slightly smaller then Emu and Ostrich. It reaches up to 59 to 79 inches in height and between 55 and 129 lbs in weight.

Habitat

The Cassowary lives in tropical rainforest in lowland and highland dense forests . Because of the life in deep forest this bird is rarely seen in the wild.

Interesting Facts

The Cassowary has a helmet like crest called a casque on the head. The casque can reach up to 6.7 inches in height and usually 6 inches long. The casque is used for self defense and it prevents skull injuries. The Cassowary has exellent eyesight and can pick up very low pitch sound's. The females are larger than males and there is only 1,200 to 1,500 Cassowary left in Australia.
