About the Author
My name is Ayanna Tavares and I am a rising junior
at HMTCA (Hartford Magnet Trinity College Academy) .
Writing has always been something that has kept
me grounded yet educated. Composing poetry taps
into a kinder, wiser, and perhaps more hopeful me.
It helps me articulate a feeling or a place that
otherwise would've been lost. There's no right or
wrong, and it's enjoyable to see the world through
different perspectives.

For my portfolio, I thought it would be cool to
focus on specific superpowers. I picked 6 that stood
out to me and created my own world on some, and
delve into what we currently live through in others.
Each poem is a journey with many roads, (some
longer than others), and is a way of remembering
and showing what the outside world may not see.

X-Ray Vision- the ability to see through solid objects
or people.

You don't need X-ray vision to see through me.
No super powers required to penetrate my defense.

Without listening to your mother's rant
you can tell that my motives are transparent.

A sturdy intuition could give you
the strong impression that my logic is flimsy.

Before the flat lady sang the first note of the book,
you knew that my story was thin.

Don't!
Brainwashing - the concept that the human mind can be altered or controlled by certain psychological techniques.

Knowledge is power.
Unless that knowledge is baseless.
Dont keep your theories grounded, or your eyes.
It cuts and tints your heart,
Like razor rain.
The powerful puppet masters who hide in the shadows
Spewing out filth by slings.
Writing your character off in a script already dead.
Don’t be disguised,
By tabloids and social media.
They always have a hidden criteria.
Don’t be a pawn in the government’s game.
The evil pharmaceutical companies who want you to be sick
And hide natural cures brainwashing the public with propaganda.
“The virus was man-made, a weapon created by NATO”
“If you can hold your breath without coughing for 10 seconds, you dont have COVID-19”
“Sipping water every 15 minutes can cure or prevent the virus”
“COVID-19 is a hoax”
Warping your mind,
And rearing you away from the facts.
Riddled with non-intellectual waffle.
Watch a documentary,
Read a book or journal.
For these are part of the kernel,
Of knowledge you require.

The Girl In the Mirror
Invulnerabilty - the ability to be immune or highly resistant to
one or more forms of physical damage, injury or disease and
illness.

I
A girl, a fool, a sinner.

I dance on tabletops of marble and glass
And when I fall, I fall hard.
My blood on the floor,
stars in my vision.
I stand, and I sway, and I laugh.

I bleed everywhere.
Red stains on my sheets,
the pages of every book on the shelf,
the hands of the people who try so helplessly to hold me up.
A bullet wound that never heals
and my clothes are crimson just like my smile.

My fingerprints are everywhere,
smudged.
Because I need to exist and I need it known that I exist.
I need my existence to be scientifically irrefutable
because if there is no proof I was here… was I?
II
I am a ghost in the hallways of my own palace
Haunting my own home, a whisper in the walls.
I do not belong here, I say in the mirror.
You do not belong anywhere my reflection replies.
I find the darkest corner and bury myself there until somebody
comes looking.
But nobody ever does.
At least, not looking for me.
They’re looking for her, the reflection, the girl I could be, but I
go with them anyway because I can’t be alone for one more second.

You see, the only thing that is invincible is the teenage girl.
A stake through the heart, a silver bullet, they can’t touch her.
She dances around them all
with agility you can’t fathom unless you’ve been her.
You can’t stop watching as she rises and falls, rises and falls,
blood on the stage and her dress and her palms.

III
You don’t look invincible, my reflection says one day.
Tangled hair and glistening eyes
I’m scared of her, the girl in the mirror,
because she is the only person who sees me like this.
She is the only person who knows the truth about me,
Knows my worst secrets and yet she stays in the mirror.
You don’t look invulnerable, she repeats. You look broken.
I smile. A true, genuine smile,

Same thing, I tell her.
