https://www.all-languages.org.uk/ Introduction
These calligrams were created by primary-aged language learners, with the inspiration of their teachers, in Spring of 2024 as part of a celebration of Primary creativity , organised by volunteers at the Association for Language Learning in the United Kingdom.
We thank everyone who took part ! and congratulate you on using your language so imaginatively. We believe that is an important part of what language is for!
Just over a hundred years ago, at the end of the First
World War, the French poet Guillaume Apollinaire published a set of poems called Calligrammes in which he used ink and fonts to draw recognisable shapes using connected words. You can locate examples by searching for ‘Calligrammes’ online.
This volume highlights the creations of 9-11 year-olds (but some may be even younger!) Volume 1 is for 7-9s.

At ALL we received contributions from schools around the country, and have selected one from each school to include in these publications. We also selected examples of all of the languages represented, so some schools may have more than one entry.
Thanks to volunteers Clare Seccombe for the inspiration, Sue Cave for advice and Crista Hazell for editorial work!
