How has the geography of the West shaped who we are?

This will include the video that my group Charlie and Magnus made at Sundre pioneer village museum. We made the video on why you should visit the ranger station there. The pioneer village was a bunch of building including a workshop, church, school, and  some houses. The new settlers changed the culture of the west and our culture the Pioneer Village shows this.

I chose the Banff Gondola on Sulphur Mountain because I think it reflects to me more. The Gondola uses the terrain of the mountain to go up for good sight seeing. The hiking trail used switchbacks because the mountain was so steep. The gondola represents location because you need a mountain for it. Movement to bring supplies for the gondola, and human interaction because of the ruining habitats for many species creating the stores at the top and the hiking trail. It was a economic change because it brought in even more tourism to Banff and nature for the same reasons as human interaction. This connects me for the fact that I’ve hiked my entire life and have done this hike up and down when I was 9 in the pouring hail and rain. I’ve grown up hiking so the hike up and down Sulphur Mountain really connected to me. Sulphur Mountain is another great tourist destination for Banff with the view at the top and the museum. This also feeds Banff’s economy as tourism is the biggest money maker in Banff.

The cave and basin is where we discovered the first hot springs in Banff I was able to get a tour of the property where the cave is and go inside of the cave. This represents movement and human interaction the most because of the trains being built it brings in tourism to see the cave. Its also location because they found the basin in a certain place. It placed a social change in affect to control people who go in the basin because if you do its a federal offence and also a economic change for tourism and jobs again. It connects to me because I’ve been here to see the cave and basin and went in the hot springs pool. I also liked the snails because when we on lock down my Mom made me do a project on snails and there was snails in the hot springs. The Cave brought even more tourists to Banff but what really brought people was the pool with the sulphur water which used to attract people from all over the world and still does as Ms Willemse said.

The Banff cave and basin was discovered in 1883 by 3 railway workers: William and Tom McCardell and third partner Frank McCabe. The cave and basin is a very big tourist attraction in the Banff national park. Did you know that Banff is actually a national park and was the first of Canada. The cave and basin still stands as a major tourist attraction to people all across the world. In the cave you can not swim or even touch the water as it will disturb the snails and the other wildlife that lives in the smelly sulphur water.

I’m doing the pipe coaster. The pipe coaster is a 1 person roller coaster that goes down a mountain on one pipe. You need a mountain for the pipe coaster to go downhill just like a roller coaster. It uses the naturally steep slopes on the mountain to go faster and then some flat parts to slow down a bit. I think it represents location because you need a mountain for the coaster. I also think it’s movement because you move down the mountain and the trend of putting this on mountains is high right now. So movement of ideas as well. It represents economic change with putting this on your mountain. I can connect because I’ve seen so many of these and Ive dreamt of going on it. It connects to me because I like getting that adrenaline rush and this gave me that. Its also a very fun way to get down the mountain. The Pipe Coaster fed a new group of tourists to Revelstoke, people who don’t bike or hike but enjoy Roller Coasters/ Pipe Coasters.

The Revelstoke pipe coaster is one of the new features on the Revelstoke mountain. This offered more tourism to Revelstoke alongside the bike park in the summer and skiing in the winter.

This is my comic I made in the app Comic Life. I had to make a comic that’s only 1 page long and have 10 words describing each of the 5 themes of Geography. Under the definition I included a photo that helps describe it on the next page in the book will be better definitions and describing the photos. These 5 comic boxes will also describe what the definition of Geography is. The 5 themes of geography is the definition of Geography.

The Golden Skybridge was my second favourite destination. The Skybridge was in Golden and I like it because of the fact that it had the highest suspension bridge and zip line in Canada. It also had a bunch of high ropes courses with mini zip lines that you could do 360-1080 on. It represents human interaction with making habitats from animals into a mini amusement park it is also location because you needed the big canyon to have the highest zip line and bridge in canada. This didn’t change the west that much but it created jobs and brought in tourism to golden which falls under economic change. It also shows human environment interaction with people cutting down trees ruining good animal habitat. This connects to me because I used to have a zip line in my backyard and I’ve been on many suspension bridges so it was like I was going back in time. This used geography nicely building it over a canyon. It offered great tourism to Golden which is only really a tourist destination for their Ski mountain in the wintertime. So in the summer this fed some good economy giving more jobs.

The Golden sky bridge opened April 15 of 2021. It is Canada’s highest suspension bridge and also has the highest zip line. To achieve this they built it over a massive canyon. The golden sky bridge has the best high ropes course I’ve ever seen with many different zip lines and obstacles like ladders, and bridges. The sky bridge is now one of the biggest tourist attractions in the small town of Golden.

I’m choosing painted warriors. Painted warriors is just archery from a First Nations view. They used the forest for good landscape for giving a real environment and the field for long range practice. I think its location because you need a forest for this type of archery, its also human environment interaction because you literally kill animals. This is social because it’s the culture on how First Nations would hunt. Also economic change for killing animals and walking on their habitat. This connects to me because I used to do archery at my cabin and I’ve gone hunting with my uncle. So the First Nations point of view connected to me because that’s how me and my Uncle would hunt. The Painted Warrior offered a good perspective on culture before tourists and settlers came. Food and fur was a big piece of the economy when settlers came to North America and this is how the First Nations got this food with this method.

Painted warrior is an indigenous outdoor archery centre to learn how to shoot animals in the First Nations culture. The First Nations think you should shoot an animal these following ways. Kill it very fast so that it experiences zero pain and use all of the animal so that none is wasted.

Place- Cultural and physical. For physical its what was made by the landscape and by Earth. Cultural means what Man Kind made. I chose this photo because our culture and Man Kind made the train track in this photo.

Regions- Formal and functional this means like made up City’s like Deep Cove or real/functional  City’s like North Vancouver. This photo is a picture of Banff which is a functional city.

This next section will be about the Royal Tyrell Museum of dinosaurs. People come all over the world to visit this museum and it is one of the best museums to see dinosaurs so thus feeds Drumheller’s economy tremendously. I took many pictures here and made a video of my favourite dinosaur. Ive been at this museum before with my family I made my own fossils out of plaster we went around the museum and we went hiking around the badlands. 

These photos will be about scenery that draws people to all these nice places. I was lucky enough to visit place like emerald lake, lake Louise, all the mountains in Banff including sulphur and tunnel mountain, and many more but here is some photos that I took on our trip. These Mountains and the views bring tons of tourists and feed a lot of economy for these small cities. because with out tourists or the nice mountains they wouldn’t have any money.

The Last Spike is the place where we nailed in the last spike on the railroad of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The Last Spike represents location for where the last spike was hammered, human interaction for wrecking the animals habitat, and movement for moving products people and ideas in the trains. This shaped the west with nature by wrecking other animals homes for our movement, economic change for getting money from tourism and getting jobs for other people this also shows movement with moving people, products, and ideas. My connection the the trains in this photo is the fact that I’ve taken trains to travel making memories and that’s why I bought my train souvenir. This also connects to me because all the products that I buy likely are on a train that uses the CPR. This helps me answer the driving question because the Trains of the CPR brought people to different cities for tourism to provide for our economy.

The last spike was driven into the railway by Donald Smith on November 7 in 1885. The driving of this spike honoured the agreement that Canada made with British Columbia. The agreement was to have BC part of Canada instead of the USA. BC’s request was to have a railway to connect BC to the east coast of Canada.

About The Author I am a 5’7 Caucasian Male. I like paying sports like Hockey, Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing, and Basketball. I have many friends in and out of North Vancouver and a great family. I do decent and school and wish to become a bike engineer or a business owner.

This last section will be about all the fun things we did that attracts tourists which feeds small towns economy like the Pipe Coaster in Revelstoke and the zip lines in Golden, also like the boat cruise in Lake Minuwakie. 

This first page will be about the trains to transport people to different places to start tourism off a long time ago. Here’s some pictures of the trains I saw and was able to take a pic of. I learned a lot about trains at the last spike. Like I said at the Last Spike reflection trains offer people to go to different tourist destinations fast and easy with the help of the CPR.

The Head Smashed in Buffalo Museum was really interesting and I learned a lot about it. It sits on a cliff which was used for a Buffalo jump. So they used the cliff and the plains fields to gather the Buffalo and throw them off. It represents location because they needed a cliff to herd the buffalo to jump off and movement to herd the buffalo and the buffalo needed to be running and also movement of ideas to make it work. Its social because they had to communicate to get the Buffalo of the cliff. It connects to me because I’ve grown up learning about First Nations In elementary school and high school so far. So I’ve grown up learning about First Nation and there way of life. So the First Nations have really shaped me. The Buffalo Jump offers some good tourism to the middle of nowhere and good money to the First Nations.

The head smashed in buffalo jump museum sits where there was a real buffalo jump. A buffalo jump is how the Blackfoot First Nations tribe killed buffalo. They would have some people disguised as wolves so that the scent would draw them toward the cliff and make them uneasy. They would continue to do until more Blackfoot with heard them towards the cliff forming a wall to block them in. The wolves would then start running to make them jump of the cliff and die. 

Location- Absolute and relative absolute is your exact location like your Latitude and Longitude. Relative location is like for example I’m at Seycove or I’m 3 Kilometres away from my house which is in this picture representing absolute location with the Longitude and Latitude.

Human environment interaction- Climate and resources. For climate its how we change the atmosphere and ruin it. Putting the Gondola in effected terrain and Animal habitat by ruining the slope and by taking out trees. For resources its using the Trees that were taken down for the Hiking Path and the Gondola to build the building at the top or just putting it to waste.

In my opinion I think what made the West is tourism. I think this because tourism offered so many jobs and lots of money to local companies when tourists come. This shapes our economy making certain City’s around tourism like Banff or Whistler both major tourists destinations from Skiing and Mountain Biking. We also made stuff in the West to make tourism happen for example the Trains that we built. But I think the most drawing activity is sight seeing so the Geography brings tourists. It connects with me because on this trip I realized how much money tourists pay and how many there are I’ve also been a tourist so I know why they come to the West. Different tourists that come to the west also brought ideas shaping the culture of the West. That’s why tourists and settlers shaped my Worldview.

Here is some pictures of the museums that attract people to the west we went to so many museums on this trip to many to count but I will include the best picture I took from each museum. These museums varied from Canada’s past to animal and nature museums. The museums attract people who would like to learn about Canada’s past and the animals that lived and still live here.

The Badlands were in Drumheller we hiked on the ones above the Royal Tyrol Museum of Dinosaurs. Its a bunch of rocks and sand mixed together making weird shapes in the hills. I think is most location because that’s where all the fossils are its also movement because the fossils moved by river and the ice age that was there. This represents nature for making the fossils go there and economic change for tourism. This connects to me because when I was young I loved Dinosaurs and have done the exact same thing that we did that day make fossils hike and explore the museum. Me and my Dad used to watch documentaries on Dinosaurs and read books about them. That’s why we went to Drumheller earlier. Drumheller’s only tourist attraction is the Royal Tyrell Museum of Dinosaur’s and the Badlands feeding a lot of it’s economy.

The badlands are part of the main attraction to Drumheller the main attraction would be the Royal Tyrell museum and this is where they found a majority of their fossils. This is such a big tourist destination that they built an entire town around it and themed the town about dinosaurs.

Movement- Movement is the movement of products and people on say Planes, Trains, or Cars/Trucks it can also be people moving or texting. It can also be the movement of ideas meaning like a Paper Boy handing out Newspapers. I chose this picture because Silas was walking representing movement of People.
