Mr Hoskins &amp; Mr Smith are now fully into their marathon training with less than two months to go. As the evenings get lighter, the training runs get longer! We will be announcing some very exciting fundraising event news in a few weeks' time, we are planning a special day where everyone can get involved and support our runners.

This month's 'Shining Stars' have been awarded for demonstrating our school's vision, values or developing their learning skills. We are very proud of all of their achievements #letyourlightshine

Poldark Museum Visit Earlier this month Poldark class visited the Helston Museum of Cornish Life. The children were treated to a workshop where they were able to play with replica toys from the past and were then shown how to make their own peg dolls and spinning tops!&nbsp;

Zennor's Art Adventures This month saw Zennor class consolidate their learning in Art with visits to the Barbara Hepworth Museum and the Tate in St Ives. The children enjoyed a fascinating morning of exploring and observing. Thank you so much to the parent helpers who supported the trip.

School Council Update Our School Council have been incredibly busy this month, making fundraising plans and thinking about how our school can reduce its carbon footprint. Comic Relief The councillors are very excited that staff will be taking part in Aspire's 'Connect 40' to raise money and will cheer the runners and walkers on as they reach the school. On Friday 15th March the School Council have decided to hold a non uniform day to raise money for this wonderful cause.

Sustainability The School Council have been working with the teachers to raise awareness of the impact of global warming. All classrooms now have new recycling bins and the children have noticed that there is very little non-recyclable rubbish in school. They would now like to purchase new bins for the playground and field areas to encourage children to recycle when they are playing outside.

Head of School: This Month at St Uny CE Academy

Feast Day 2024! Earlier this month, Year 5 and Year 6 represented the school at this year's St Ives Feast Day. Our pupils danced confidently through the streets before our recorder players performed brilliantly. Well done to all involved - it was an honour to take part in such a special event.

Cross Country The last cross country event of the year took place at Cape Cornwall School on Tuesday 27th&nbsp;February. My goodness it was foggy - the runners disappeared from view as they went around the course, and they had to be extra resilient and dig in to complete the run. As usual they gave their all and made us extremely proud. There were some memorable finishes, and some excellent displays of friendship and support as children helped each other. Well done everyone. We are looking forward to seeing which of our St Uny runners will be selected to represent Penwith in the county finals.

Netball Stars Our St Uny netball team have continued to impress us with their determination and good sportsmanship this month. The team visited Mounts Bay Dome for their latest league fixtures and played four games incredibly well, showing a huge improvement in skill and stamina. Well done to everyone involved!

Tehidy Trip This month Tehidy class took the train from St Erth into St Ives and visited the Lifeboat Station. The children had a wonderful time exploring the local area - thank you to the team at the Lifeboat station for making us feel so welcome!

School Start Time A gentle reminder that the school starts at 08.45am. The main gates open at 08.30am each morning so that the children can meet and play before school. Children who arrive after 08.45am will be marked as late, persistent lateness will be monitored.

Reporting Absences If your child is going to be absent from school due to illness, then please inform the office before 9am in the morning, and let us know why your child is going to be absent, and when you expect them to return. You may either phone the office on 01736 794180 and leave a message or alternatively send an email to hello@stuny.org.uk

Attendance Guidance Here at St Uny C of E Academy, we recognise that there are occasions when it is appropriate to authorise an absence, such as when a pupil is genuinely too ill to attend school, has a medical appointment that cannot be taken outside of school hours or a request for leave has been agreed in exceptional circumstances. However, the Government does not support parents taking children out of school unless the school agrees this is appropriate under ‘exceptional circumstances’. Any request for leave should be made in writing to the Headteacher using the school’s request form. Please note - at St Uny C of E Academy we are not able to authorise holidays as this is not deemed to be an 'exceptional circumstance'. If your child is absent from school without authorisation, you will be committing an offence under the Education Act 1996. We may submit a request to Cornwall Council for a Penalty Notice to be issued, in accordance with Sections 444A and 444B of the said Act. Penalty Notices are issued per liable parent, per child and each carry a fine of £60 if paid within 21 days or £120 if paid after this but within 28 days. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice may result in legal action. Absence not authorised by the school may result in a prosecution in the Magistrates’ Court under Section 444(1) or Section 444(1A) of the Education Act 1996, leading to a fine of up to £2,500 and/or a custodial sentence. Cornwall Council may also apply for the costs incurred in taking the matter to Court. Penalty notices can also be issued for persistent lateness and poor punctuality. Please ensure your child arrives at school on time each morning. Registration is at 08.45am.

Domestic Abuse advise - First Light: 0300 777 4777 Support in your area: You can walk into a local BOOTS pharmacy and ask for&nbsp;‘ANI’&nbsp;( Say, “I’m asking for Annie”) or ask to access their&nbsp;‘Safe Spaces’&nbsp;where you will get support with domestic abuse. There will be a trained member of staff. You can also download and access the Bright Sky app safely. This will give you access to a directory of support agencies and help lines. If you have any concerns regarding safeguarding, please speak to our Designated Safeguarding Lead, Mr Hoskins.

Social Media Age Limits We have had incidents of parents reporting issues surrounding children using social media outside of school. WhatsApp has a minimum age limit of 16.

Smart Watches We have noticed a rise in the number of pupils coming into school wearing smart watches. Please note, smart watches are not permitted in school in line with our safeguarding procedures and these devices will be held by the class teacher and returned to an adult at the end of the school day.

Throughout the week at St Uny CE Academy, pupils are awarded house points for demonstrating our school values, progress in learning, fantastic effort in different challenges and for contributing to the life of the school. This year the school's SEN focus is dyslexia. This month we will share some information about dyslexia and spelling.&nbsp; Spelling is one of the biggest, and most widely experienced difficulties for people with dyslexia. Most dyslexic people can learn to read well with the right support, however, spelling appears to be a difficulty that persists throughout life. Many children with dyslexia find it difficult to learn how letters and sounds correspond to each other and may not be able to recall the right letters to be able to spell the sounds in words. The complexity of the English language means that children also have to remember irregular spelling patterns and sight words such as the, said, was. These words are known as 'common exception words' at school.&nbsp; Although spelling is likely to be something that a dyslexic person always finds challenging, there are strategies that parents and teachers can put in place to support learning. The local authority's Cognition and Learning Service work with lots of pupils with dyslexia across schools in Cornwall. The service worked collaboratively with a few primary schools in Cornwall to create helpful guidance containing tips and ideas to help parents/ carers to support their child learn their spellings and to write in a fun and purposeful way. This guidance will be sent out with today's newsletter.
