Head of School: This Month at St Uny CE Academy

Cornwall Schools Parliament Earlier this month, a group of our Year 6 pupil leaders visited County Hall in Truro to take part in this year's Cornwall Schools Parliament. Throughout the day, the children took part in a range of activities which included a debate in the Council Chamber, budgeting tasks and an election. The children were also fortunate enough to interview a local MP. Our leaders were incredibly confident and spoke in front of 22 schools at the event - we were very proud of them. What a brilliant opportunity for our leaders to champion pupil voice!

Cross Country Achievements The second cross country event of the year was another triumph for the St Uny team. They showed excellent resilience on the final hill, supported each other beautifully and behaved impeccably. Y4 are shining as the year group with the most enthusiastic runners! Thanks to Mrs Cook and all parents who supported us. The next race is on 30th&nbsp;January, and we are really looking forward to it.

Children In Need 2023 Earlier this month we decided to wear our pyjamas to school in order to raise money for 'Children in Need'. We had such a brilliant day fundraising and learning about the cause - we are thrilled to announce we raised over £250! Thank you to everyone for their support.

Forest School Remembrance This month we have thought about those who lost their lives fighting for our country. We have also reflected upon war in the world today and have thought about those living in fear and danger. In forest school, children have created fallen leaves as part of their learning whilst the whole school has reflected about this during Collective Worship.

Thank you to our team of dedicated staff who work tirelessly to ensure our pupils enjoy fantastic learning experiences. We are proud of all that the children have achieved and would like to thank the parents / carers for their continued support. Mr Hoskins - Head of School

Year 3 had a wonderful time during the first residential trip of the year! The group didn't travel too far and enjoyed a residential in St Ives, starting the trip with a visit to Paradise Park. The children enjoyed exploring the park, learning about the animals and loved their VIP experience in the Jungle Barn! Year 3 slept overnight at Cohort Hostel in St Ives, where they enjoyed music, games and a film night - the pizza was also delicious! Following breakfast, the children spent the second morning exploring the Tate and took part in a sketchbook workshop before returning to St Uny. Thank you so much to the staff and the team at Cohort for ensuring the trip was a success!

School Start Time A gentle reminder that the school starts at 08.45am. The main gates open at 08.30am each morning so that the children can meet and play before school. Children who arrive after 08.45am will be marked as late, persistent lateness will be monitored.

Reporting Absences If your child is going to be absent from school due to illness, then please inform the office before 9am in the morning, and let us know why your child is going to be absent, and when you expect them to return. You may either phone the office on 01736 794180 and leave a message or alternatively send an email to hello@stuny.org.uk

Attendance Guidance Here at St Uny C of E Academy, we recognise that there are occasions when it is appropriate to authorise an absence, such as when a pupil is genuinely too ill to attend school, has a medical appointment that cannot be taken outside of school hours or a request for leave has been agreed in exceptional circumstances. However, the Government does not support parents taking children out of school unless the school agrees this is appropriate under ‘exceptional circumstances’. Any request for leave should be made in writing to the Headteacher using the school’s request form. Please note - at St Uny C of E Academy we are not able to authorise holidays as this is not deemed to be an 'exceptional circumstance'. If your child is absent from school without authorisation, you will be committing an offence under the Education Act 1996. We may submit a request to Cornwall Council for a Penalty Notice to be issued, in accordance with Sections 444A and 444B of the said Act. Penalty Notices are issued per liable parent, per child and each carry a fine of £60 if paid within 21 days or £120 if paid after this but within 28 days. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice may result in legal action. Absence not authorised by the school may result in a prosecution in the Magistrates’ Court under Section 444(1) or Section 444(1A) of the Education Act 1996, leading to a fine of up to £2,500 and/or a custodial sentence. Cornwall Council may also apply for the costs incurred in taking the matter to Court.

Godrevy Minack Experience! Earlier this month, Year 2 enjoyed a day at the Minack Theatre. The children took part in a workshop linked to their learning about the Gunpower Plot before enjoying a tour of the historic theatre. Thank you so much to the Minack team for supporting us with this trip.

Gwithian Farm Visit! Gwithian class had a fantastic trip to Cornhill farm this morning. They learnt about sustainable farming methods, how to care for animals, what is needed to grow quality crops such as wheat and barley and the lifecycles of chickens. Everyone had a brilliant time and we would like to thank farmer Pete for this great educational experience!

There will be a trained member of staff. You can also download and access the Bright Sky app safely. This will give you access to a directory of support agencies and help lines. If you have any concerns regarding safeguarding, please speak to our Designated Safeguarding Lead, Mr Hoskins.

Social Media Age Limits We have had incidents of parents reporting issues surrounding children using social media outside of school. WhatsApp has a minimum age limit of 16.

Smart Watches We have noticed a rise in the number of pupils coming into school wearing smart watches. Please note, smart watches are not permitted in school in line with our safeguarding procedures and these devices will be held by the class teacher and returned to an adult at the end of the school day.

This year our SEN focus is dyslexia. Each month we will share some information about dyslexia that may be of interest to you, this month we will explain what dyslexia is. Alternatively, Mrs Brand will be on the school gate between 8.30-8.45 on Mondays and Wednesdays if you want to speak to her directly, this can be to arrange a longer meeting at another time.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; What is dyslexia?&nbsp; <ul><li>Dyslexia is a form of neurodiversity.&nbsp;</li><li>Neurodiversity is a concept where neurological differences are recognised and respected as any other human variation.&nbsp;</li></ul>There is no one single definition of dyslexia. At St Uny, we refer to the definition used by the local authority Cognition and Learning Service. This states that: <ul><li>Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling.</li><li>Characteristic features of dyslexia are difficulties in phonological awareness, verbal memory, verbal processing speed and/or visual processing and visual memory.&nbsp;</li><li>Dyslexia occurs across a range of intellectual abilities.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>It is best thought of as a spectrum, not a distinct category, as there are no clear cut off points.</li></ul>
