CHRISTMAS EVE
TIÓ
It is a magic log with a face and two short legs made of wood. It wears a red catalan traditional hat and it is covered with a small blanket. You give food to it the weeks before the 24th of December. This day children hit the Tió with a stick while singing a song. Then children go in front of the Nativity scene to sing a Carol. When they come back they look under the blanket and they find there presents. We say that if the Tió eats then it poops presents (makes poo-poo) when you hit him.

DECORATIONS
We decorate the streets with Christmas lights, usually of the colours of Christmas: red, green, golden and white. In all the houses there are Christmas trees and also in the squares of the towns. We decorate christmas trees with: christmas balls, stars, lights, cards, bells, jingle bells, snowmen and tinsel.
We prepare a Nativity scene with the virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, Jesus the baby, animals, the Three Wise Men, angels, shepherds, demons and the “Caganer” (it’s a person that is hiding for making poo-poo)
EL CAGANER
NATIVITY
The Three Wise Men are called Melcior (european), Gaspar (asiatic) and Baltasar (black). They come from eastern Asia in carriages or on camels to give presents to children. They arrive on the 5th January with their helpers, who deliver the presents during the night. The presents are opened on the 6th of January. People wait in the streets to see them arrive with lanterns. It’s a street parade. The mayor of the town receives them and gives them the key to the town houses. Some days before children give their presents list to the assistants that come first. If you are not a good boy or a good girl they give you coal instead of presents.
