Each child must participate in pre-primary education and complete basic education.

Basic education and compulsory education usually begin in the year of the child’s seventh birthday.

Oppivelvollisuus tarkoittaa sitä, että lapsi osallistuu perusopetukseen tai saa perusopetuksen oppimäärän tiedot muulla tavalla.

Oppivelvollisuus jatkuu myös perusopetuksen jälkeen. Oppivelvollisuus päättyy, kun opiskelija täyttää 18 vuotta tai opiskelija on suorittanut ylioppilastutkinnon tai ammatillisen tutkinnon.

Huoltajalla on vastuu, että lapsi suorittaa oppivelvollisuutensa.

Compulsory education means that the child participates in basic education or obtains the knowledge corresponding to the basic education syllabus in some other way.

Compulsory education continues also after basic education. Compulsory education ends when the student turns 18 or has completed the matriculation examination or a vocational qualification.

The guardian is responsible for making sure that the child completes compulsory education.

Jokaisella oppilaalla on oma luokka ja opettaja.
Luokassa voi työskennellä myös koulunkäynninohjaajia tai -avustajia.

Rehtori on koulun johtaja.  

Koulun henkilökunta voi olla mitä tahansa sukupuolta. Enemmistö henkilökunnasta on yleensä naisia.

Perusopetuksessa opetuskieli on yleensä suomi tai ruotsi.

Each pupil has a class and a teacher of their own.

Special needs instructors or assistants may also be
working in the classroom.

The principal is the head of the school.

The staff working in the school can be of any gender. The majority of the staff is usually women.

The language of instruction in comprehensive school is usually Finnish or Swedish.

Lukuvuosi alkaa elokuussa ja päättyy touko-kesäkuun vaihteessa. Lukuvuosi koostuu syys- ja kevätlukukaudesta.

Kesäloma kestää noin kaksi kuukautta.

Muita lyhyempiä lomia ovat syysloma, joululoma ja talviloma. 

The school year begins in August and ends at
the end of May or at the beginning of June. The school year consists of an autumn and spring term.

The summer holiday lasts about two months.

Other shorter holidays are the autumn, Christmas and winter holidays.

Pupils must not come to school if they are ill.

The guardians must inform the teacher if the child will be absent.
