How to Hook Your Students into Staying Connected All Year Long
Click this button to hear me introduce our theme for this year.
Students at the 4th grade level like to feel that school is still fun. At the beginning of the school year we have been successful with creating a theme to connect students to their learning and to 4th grade class expectations in a fun way. The theme is related to something all students are familiar with, such as Superheros, Disney World, or a Beach/Island Oasis. This year we have introduced a Star Wars theme and have students participating as Jedi younglings.
The first week of school they receive their Jedi robes after going through a few “training activities”. The robes are t-shirts from Michael's. The training exercises can be anything from role playing class expectations to science explorations with air pressure in balloons to see if they can “feel the force”.
Throughout the year students earn their way to the next level by following class expectations and doing their best on assignments.
Last week we held a Jedi ceremony where students wore their robes to receive a Yoda river stone created from sculpey clay. These stones can be used to rub when more confidence is needed, in situations such as just before an important test.
