Our bookmarks are in the shape of a tie. Why a tie? The necktie, the world’s most common fashion accessory, was first introduced by Croatians. We are the homeland of the necktie. The story begins during the bloody Thirty Years’ War, in which Croatian soldiers took part as well. They stood out among soldiers from other nations on the streets of Paris with their elegantly tied neckbands that served as an identifying mark. The accessory can be found in Croatian folk tradition – young women would give a kerchief or a scarf made from linen or silk to their fiancés as a symbol of their mutual fidelity. But in addition to this emotional aspect, soldiers wore it around their necks for protection, because the enemy’s sword would glide across the silk, without causing any cuts, and because it was much more practical and comfortable than the stiff lace collars worn by French soldiers. The more fashion-conscious Parisians soon adopted the elegant style of the Croatian soldiers, worn “à la Croate” (“Croatian style”). Soon the term became a root for the new French word – cravate. Soon enough, even the young King Louis XIV became an ambassador for the cravat, as he began wearing it in 1646, and other French nobility followed his example. “Cravat fever” soon took over the entire Europe and the world. In keeping with this year’s theme, we read fairy-tales by our famous writer Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić (1874-1938), known also as “Croatian Andersen”. She wrote a collection of fairy tales “Croatian Tales of Long Ago” (“Priče iz davnine”), the most published and translated Croatian prose collection. By creating an original fairy-tale world based on Croatian oral literature and the rich Slavic mythology, Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić has produced a work which continues to attract the interest of readers, critics and artists all around the world. Highly valued by both national and foreign critics, she had the ability to identify with the psyche of the child, to understand the purity and naivety of the world of children. Fairy tales included in the collection “Croatian Tales of Long Ago” have been explored in different forms and adapted into different media. The collection has earned Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić as many as four nominations for the world’s highest literary honour: the Nobel Prize in Literature. In the context of Croatian cultural history, she is also remembered as the first female member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. This year we celebrate 105 years of the first publication of “Croatian Tales of Long Ago”. Among eight stories, we have chosen “Stribor’s Forest” for the motifs on our bookmarks.
