Once again we are so proud to showcase all the excellent learning and curriculum opportunities that our pupils have experienced this half term. We have so much to celebrate and so many talented little people. The artwork in year 3 is amazing and the writing around school now is truly impressive.&nbsp; Please take time to look through this edition of The Splash which gives you a glimpse into life in and out of the classroom.&nbsp; Have a fantastic half term everyone.&nbsp;

Please note: We have our next PTA meeting on March 9th&nbsp;- 7.45pm over Zoom. Meeting details will be shared with committee members after half term!&nbsp;There is lots more information on our new PTA on pages 28 &amp; 29.

Our learning project 'Ground-breaking Greeks' has been full of facts, I wonder how many your child can recall! Next half term we have our Greek day to look forward to alongside more art based activities including some Greek pottery creations.&nbsp;

"I have really enjoyed learning about the different Greek periods - I thought it was really interesting that both the Minoans and Myceneans time periods both ended at the same time - I wonder what happened!" "We loved the rugby tournament with Crackington- it was a nice way to end the series of lessons on tag rugby."

In maths, we began with statistics after Christmas - specifically focusing on line graphs. We will develop our statistic skills further in cross curricular sessions such as presenting results in science. 

We continued to turn up the intensity in our maths lessons, working extra hard to develop our understanding of written methods in multiplication and division. Most children have found this topic particularly tricky, do practise these regularly with your child at home. Taking time to practise times table regularly will also support the children hugely in their day to day maths sessions.&nbsp;

We have been using written methods to multiply in maths and I am so proud of the children’s achievements with this.&nbsp; I am particularly pleased with those children who have been working hard to learn their times tables at home– thank you.&nbsp; A special mention too for those children have been completing extra calculations at home.&nbsp; Superstars!&nbsp;

Our ICT unit of ‘Repeating Patterns’ has been enjoyed by the children.&nbsp; They have been learning how to write algorithms to create a pattern and another to repeat the patten.&nbsp; It’s been exciting to watch the children’s creations.&nbsp;

Thank you Summerleaze for your positive attitude towards your learning and for showing great resilience when things have been tough.&nbsp; So proud of you all 😊&nbsp;

PE&nbsp; In PE Wanson have had two amazing coaches. They have developed their gymnastics skills and tried a brand new sport for BPA-Lacrosse. It is an extremely fast, skilful game which required a variety of techniques. Here Josh is developing his hand/eye co-ordination and Charlie is improving his ‘throwing’ technique with Blake ready to catch the ball.&nbsp;

The children enjoyed making mummy death masks.&nbsp; They used brown paper parcel tape on their own faces.&nbsp;

We had fun writing our “Feast” in English.&nbsp;We created a Sandymouth “dog wall” with 18 of our pet dogs!&nbsp;

In our “Ancient Civilisations” project we are learning about Ancient Egypt and Sumeria.&nbsp; we have found out&nbsp; that they used cattle to pull a plough in the fields.&nbsp; Their tombs were full of possessions for the afterlife.&nbsp;

We had fun with our dance in PE.&nbsp; We made shapes to tell the story Roger Rock becoming Simon Soil.&nbsp; In ICT we have been learning programming&nbsp; to control a turtle.&nbsp; We have been learning months of the year and days of the week in Spanish with our new teacher Mrs Yeo.&nbsp; We heard an unusual Indian story about a king who was cooked and eaten for breakfast every day!&nbsp;

The children are trying hard to gain hose points for our new house teams.&nbsp;

We began by tasting a range of Greek foods (with mixed responses!!) and have become experts on what life was like during the different periods of Ancient Greece. We'll soon be putting this knowledge to use in our biography 'Independent Writes' and also during our forthcoming Greek Day!

Crackington class has turned into Ancient Greece over the last few weeks, as we have got stuck into our amazing new topic!

School&nbsp;council&nbsp;have had a very productive few weeks, organising and successfully launching our new house point system. They have worked incredibly hard on this and have worked amazingly well as a team.

Coming next will be to appoint House Captains and Vice House Captains. They will be organising some house based events supported by the&nbsp;school&nbsp;councillors. Top work everybody! Mr C

Bude Primary Academy Junior's Monthly Celebration Bulletin

Spring Term 1 - Tuesday 4th January to Thursday 17th February

In science, we have been learning about the permeability of soil. We carried out an investigation to see how porous different soil samples were. We made predictions, observed carefully and were able to make scientific conclusions.&nbsp;

In literacy, we have been writing a poem called ‘Summer is here’. The children have really enjoyed using descriptive language to create effective sentences. We will be following this up by writing our own independent poems called ‘Autumn is here’.&nbsp;&nbsp;

What an incredibly busy, full of learning and progress term it has been in Poppy Class! We have linked much of our learning to The Gruffalo - can you see him on our class learning board?

We have also made pizzas, squelched fat and seeds for bird feed, celebrated the New Chinese/Lunar New Year of the tiger and got thoroughly messy and wet in our weekly sensory exploration sessions.

We have formed, said, signed, sounded and matched 'special friends' and many letters during the term and created and compared 2D and 3D shapes both in the classroom and in the woods.

It has been a very exciting half term here in Millook class. We have been continuing out topic ‘Rocks, Relics and Rumbles.&nbsp;&nbsp;

We have been very curious in geography this half term. Whilst learning about tectonic plates, one child asked if other planets also had them. We talked about the gas giants not having any but we had to research to find the answer. It is believed that Mars once had tectonic activity because their were active volcanoes. It’s brilliant when we can develop our learning through curiosity and questioning.&nbsp;&nbsp;

We have also been learning about fossils. The children created their own fossils from salt dough. I’m sure you’ll agree that they turned out wonderfully.&nbsp;&nbsp;

We have been learning about sound in our science lessons.&nbsp;Using&nbsp;tuning forks and sound shapes the children investigated how sound&nbsp;travels and how the vibrations affect the pitch and volume.

English&nbsp; Our first piece of writing was a fictional recount inspired by the book Kensuke’s Kingdom. Here are excepts from Eva and Rose:&nbsp;

Michael sat up abruptly, the smell of dog breath in his face but what also came to him was the sweet smell of coconut, the soft butter sand, the soothing waves licking his feet. He could see towering palm trees and … his ball, on the other side of the beach, he attempted to sit up but everywhere hurt too much. The sun was an orb, a colossal fiery orb waiting for the perfect time the devour the tiny island in its heat. Michael was desperately trying to turn down all the bad thoughts, he started to talk to Stella&nbsp;&nbsp;Mum and Dad are ok aren’t they Stella he kept on saying this until he noticed that Stella was sprinting towards the other side of the beach heading straight for his ball. Eva

Michael’s limp, ashen body was pulled along by the enormous freezing waves. Swaying left to right, he clung on to Steller as tight as he could. Not letting her be dragged under, his strength was plummeting fast; his hope was fading even faster.&nbsp; Avalon&nbsp;

Whoa! Another fantastic half term of learning in the wonderful Northcott class. Mrs Munks, Mr Bryan, Mrs Whelan and I couldn't be prouder of the children.&nbsp;

We wrote adventure stories in English, with lots of us writing about our aspirations for the future including racing drivers, fashion designers and football stars. We are half way&nbsp;through our next unit based around biographies, our end result will be based on Alexander the Great, linking in with our current learning project.&nbsp; "I liked writing our own stories - I really liked the video stimulus we watched each day."

In art, we have been using fossils as our inspiration to develop our observational drawing skills and have begun to explore different medium, such as print making. We even used fossils to help us understand sharing and grouping in maths! I am so proud of Crooklets class who have been so inspired and engaged in our learning this half term.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Wanson returned from the Christmas break with a wonderful positive attitude and their mad sense of humour. Their desire to learn and develop as resulted in a lot of superb work across the curriculum.&nbsp;

Frozen Kingdom&nbsp; Our topic this half-term has been a study of both polar regions-the Arctic and the Antarctic. As well as researching a variety of animals that inhabit the Tundras (biomes that are usually frozen) the class also located points on an atlas using latitude and longitude.&nbsp;Ruby, Calen, Tiffany, Isla and Lauren.&nbsp;

Science&nbsp; In science we have been classifying plants and animals and we studied the scientist Carl Linnaeus who developed the process. Amy, Joe, Eddie and Alfie&nbsp;

We have really enjoyed becoming more confident using our new balance bikes during outdoor play and PE sessions.

We have shared play spaces at breaktime, with Lego being a particular favourite as you can see in one of the photos!

We cannot wait to watch our Marie Curie daffodils flower as Spring brings some colour and warmth to our garden, complete with a new soft pour area for everyone to use during outdoor play. We love learning and we love helping one another in Poppy Class!

This term we have been learning about ancient civilisations.&nbsp;The first civilisation started&nbsp;around the banks of the River Tigris and River Euphrates.&nbsp;&nbsp;Nomadic tribes started to group&nbsp;together and grow crops along the banks of these rivers. The children learned how these groups grew to become bustling cities all linked together.

In Maths, we've been working on mastering multiplication and division, we've made robots in our Cognition and Learning sessions, and created stained-glass windows after studying Coventry Cathedral in RE. 

Oh, and our tag-rugby tournament with Northcott had better tries than the Six Nations!&nbsp;🙂

Excitingly, we have re-established our PTA committee with Bude Infants and Juniors working alongside each other&nbsp;as a united team. Thank you to all of the parents and staff members who have volunteered to be part of the BPA (Bude Primary Academy) PTA committee. Your support is absolutely invaluable.&nbsp;

We now have a new chair, Emma Askham (Assistant Head of School - Juniors), two new Vice Chairs, Sam (parent) and Holly (staff), a new treasurer, Gina (parent) - who Natalie&nbsp;(our previous treasurer)&nbsp;will train up and last but not least we have a new secretary, Katie (parent). Additionally,&nbsp;Anne Garrad will still be on hand at the Infants to support too.&nbsp;

A HUGE&nbsp;thank you to Kim Stephens who has successfully led the&nbsp;PTA&nbsp;for many, many years! Kim along with her PTA team raised thousands of pounds for both schools throughout her duration as Chair, a huge achievement.&nbsp;

We have planned in a 'Bag2School' collection for the first Tuesday back after half term, 1st&nbsp;March 2022. Use half term as an opportunity to de-clutter, clear out and fill the a black bag with items that could be reused. You can include a variety of items in your donation bag, see the picture on the next page. All funds raised will go straight into our PTA fund.&nbsp;

In science, geography and history, we have been learning about how fossils are formed and built on our knowledge of different rock types. 

We have looked at Mary Anning and the significant part she played in developing our understanding of fossils. We have learnt about volcanoes, Earthquakes and tsunamis. We have also investigated what soils are made of and how they may differ.

We have had such a brilliant half term in Crooklets Class. We have delved into our project and immersed ourselves in all things rocks, relics and rumbles! 

In English, we wrote fantastic explanation texts. Our model text The street beneath our feet took us into the depths of the Earth – and then back out the other side!&nbsp;We then used this structure to write our own explanations about what you might find when the tide comes in. We used the knowledge we learnt from our geology walk to help us write these.&nbsp;&nbsp;

What a half term Summerleaze have had!&nbsp; Science has been ‘hands on’ and we have been learning how sounds are created and how these sounds reach our ear.&nbsp; Great fun, especially with the rice and drum.&nbsp;

In English, we have been writing a story called Feast.&nbsp;&nbsp;I would love to share them all with you but obviously I can’t so here is just a snippet of the superb descriptions the children have written:&nbsp;&nbsp; * At that moment, Raven noticed the dark, gloomy sky drowning the sunlight.&nbsp; * Anger built like a pot of boiling water.&nbsp; * Blinding car lights reflected on the well populated city as colossal, mammoth shoes pounded past.&nbsp; * Dad was powerless to stop her as she sprinted through the wide window like a firework dashing into the sky.&nbsp;

Widemouth have had a fantastic few weeks. They have been working hard on publishing their fiction stories based around the book 'Kensuke's Kingdom'. They have done a fantastic job of including all the punctuation and grammar they have been working on and have been applying all of the work they have been doing on handwriting.&nbsp;

In PE they have been really enjoying trying a new sport - Lacrosse. They have made amazing progress and have reached the stage where they are able to play games against each other. Lacrosse is really hard! Well done Widemouth. They have been enjoying learning about the geography of the Arctic and the Antarctic and have been comparing the two places. And in maths, year 6 have been tackling algebra. They have been resilient and hard working. It can be a tricky subject! I hope everybody has a restful half term, Mr Clarke and Mrs Yeo
