Reading is magic! By Erica L. Poglajen
Dear students and families of the Academy,
The benefits of reading are numerous; reading opens our minds to new ideas and thoughts. Likewise, it is the key for us to walk into new worlds with our imagination and to live new experiences ... through reading, we access other spaces and times, we dialogue with beings from the past and the future, be it real characters or imaginary creatures. We also discover a wide variety of perspectives, some similar and others different from ours. Reading broadens our horizons, and it is an infallible antidote to loneliness and boredom. Not to mention everything we learn from books: we acquire not only knowledge, information and data, which is no small thing, but also they invite us to reflect on new views and realities. Unknown words and expressions come to meet us and encourage us to discover them. And here is when the most beautiful challenge is played out in our minds: the search for meaning or, in other words, the interpretation of what we are reading.
It is precisely in reading that decoding mechanisms are set in motion, that is, understanding and reflection.
These are superior thinking skills, the exercise of which transforms us into bold and critical readers. In a world where the media and the networks bombard us with messages of all kinds, this capacity for discernment and analysis provided by reading is essential.
That is why in the Academy we have dedicated 2021 to reading, more precisely, to discovering, working on and polishing “reading strategies”, with the clear objective of starting to train enthusiastic, reflective and critical readers, who do not just enjoy the act of reading itself, but also critically decode the texts. In other words, this magazine shows you a wide range of comprehensive reading and literary analysis strategies, that students from the different levels and courses of the Academy learnt and worked on with their teachers. Each reading strategy by Kindergarten, primary and secondary students is accompanied by an analytical or creative work, done according to their linguistic and cognitive level. It is an immense joy to be able to share these strategies with you, in a new edition of our Annual Magazine.
Let us encourage our students, your children, from school and from home, to become fond of books and dive into reading. In the words of Roald Dahl: “I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.” We certainly do share this passion… it was this passion that has guided us here, allowed us to dream of this magazine and write the pages that you are about to read.

La magia de la lectura Erica L. Poglajen
Queridos alumnos y familias de la Academia:
Los beneficios de la lectura son numerosos; leer abre nuestra mente a nuevas ideas y pensamientos. Asimismo, es la llave para que entremos, con nuestra imaginación, a diversos mundos y vivamos experiencias enriquecedoras… a través de la lectura, accedemos a otros espacios y tiempos, dialogamos con seres del pasado y del futuro, con personajes reales o creaturas imaginarias; descubrimos realidades, algunas similares y otras diferentes a la nuestra. Leer amplia nuestros horizontes y es un antídoto infalible para la soledad y el aburrimiento. Por no hablar de todo lo que aprendemos leyendo: adquirimos no sólo conocimientos, información y datos -que no es poca cosa-, sino que además los libros nos invitan a reflexionar sobre nuevas perspectivas y miradas. Palabras y expresiones desconocidas vienen a nuestro encuentro y nos incitan a descubrirlas. Y aquí es donde se juega en nuestro intelecto el más hermoso de los desafíos: la búsqueda del sentido, la indagación… la pregunta por el ¿por qué? de lo que estamos leyendo.

Precisamente, en la lectura se ponen en marcha mecanismos de decodificación, es decir, de interpretación y reflexión. Estas son habilidades de pensamiento superiores, cuyo ejercicio nos va transformando en lectores audaces y críticos. En un mundo dónde los medios y las redes nos bombardean con mensajes de toda índole, es fundamental esta capacidad de discernimiento y análisis que otorga la lectura. Es por esto que en la Academia dedicamos el 2021 a la lectura, más precisamente, a descubrir, trabajar y pulir “reading strategies (estrategias de lectura), con el objetivo claro de empezar a formar lectores entusiastas, reflexivos y críticos, que logren no sólo disfrutar del acto de la lectura, sino además decodificar críticamente los textos. En otras palabras, esta revista expone ante ustedes una variada gama de estrategias de lectura comprensiva y análisis literario, que los alumnos de los diferentes niveles y cursos de la Academia, fueron aprendiendo y trabajando con sus docentes. Cada estrategia lectora está acompañada de un trabajo de análisis y producción, acorde al nivel lingüístico y cognitivo de los estudiantes de Jardín, primaria y secundaria.
Es una inmensa alegría poder compartir estas estrategias con ustedes, en una nueva edición de nuestra Revista Anual. Sigamos entusiasmando a nuestros alumnos, sus hijos, desde la escuela y desde casa, a encariñarse con los libros y zambullirse en la lectura. En palabras de Roald Dahl: “Me apasiona enseñar a los niños a convertirse en lectores, a sentirse cómodos con un libro, no a desanimarme. Los libros no deben ser abrumadores, deben ser divertidos, emocionantes y maravillosos; y aprender a ser un lector ofrece una gran ventaja.” Compartimos esta pasión… ella misma nos ha guiado hasta aquí, nos llevó a soñar esta revista y escribir las páginas que están a punto de leer.

STORY: THE COLOUR MONSTER
Emotions are magical as they allow us to communicate with others. In Kinder 3, the teacher read a story and we identified and explored our emotions… we associated them with colors and played with them!
It is very important to identify how we feel!
Las emociones son mágicas ya que nos permiten comunicarnos con los demás. En kinder 3, la seño nos leyó un cuento... luego identificamos y exploramos nuestras emociones. Las asociamos con colores y jugamos con ellas!
