Anglicisms

Sports
An anglicism is a word or construction borrowed from English by another language.
English sports borrowings came to the Russian language as a result of
the historical ties of the Russian and English peoples, and the superiority of
the English people in the field of sports during the origin of sports
terminology in Russian. At the end of the twentieth century, the Russian
language was swamped by a stream of Anglo-American sports vocabulary, which not
only satisfied the need for the names of new sports, but also as a fashion for
foreign words. Sport is an international field of human activity. This is
reflected in the holding of major international sporting events, in the
constantly increasing and accelerating exchange of information between
different countries.
What are Anglicisms and
Reasons for Borrowings Anglicisms in Russian.
There is a few reasons existing for borrowing such as:
1. The need to name a new thing, a new phenomenon
2. The need to distinguish between materially close, but still differing
concepts
3. The need to specialize concepts - in a particular field, for certain
purposes
4. The tendency is that a whole object, not divided into separate
components, should be designated "whole," unparalleled, and not by a
combination of words
Thought Bubble
5. The existence in the borrowed language of established systems of
terms serving a particular thematic area, professional environment, etc., and
more or less uniform in the source of borrowing of these terms. This is the
terminology of computing, which has developed on the basis of the English
language, sports terminology, as well as the vocabulary of uncodified
subsystems
6. Perception of a foreign word as a more prestigious,
"scientist," "beautifully sounding" (merchandiser)
M. A. Breiter also explores this problem and
identifies the following reasons for borrowing:
1. Lack of a corresponding concept in the cognitive base of the receptor
language. The dictionary of a business man of the 90s firmly included such
anglicisms as a badge, classifier, laptop and its new varieties: laptop,
organizer, pager, timer, scanner, tuner, printer and others
2. The absence of a corresponding name in Russian - about 15% of the
latest Anglicisms - top model, virtual, investor, sponsor, spray.
3. Among native speakers of the Russian language, the idea is widespread
that foreign technologies are more progressive than Russian ones, foreign banks are more reliable, foreign goods are of higher quality. This installation,
according to the author, is widely used in advertising.
How and When Anglicisms Arose?
"Penetration" - the initial stage, the relation of the word
only with English reality: it can be short, can be long.
"Borrowing" is a period when the scope of the word is expanded
in relation to Russian reality, for example, bedlam.
"Rooting" - a period of widespread
distribution of the word, when borrowings gradually acquire the features
inherent in the words of the Russian language, for example, athlete, club.
