What can I expect from orientation this summer?
Incoming 6th graders will cycle through 6 sessions in 30-minute intervals. TCMStrong student leaders serve as mentors to 6th graders throughout the year and will be their guides during this event.
Session 1: Students will meet with the Counseling staff to discuss schedules and services provided through the Counseling Department.
Session 2: Students will receive their school issued device and receive a brief technology orientation from the Instructional Technology Leader. NOTE: Parents MUST complete the tech form and sign the acceptable use policy PRIOR to this day. If this step is not complete, students will not be able to get their devices at orientation.
Session 3: Students will visit the library and our Library Media Specialist, Mrs. Lambert, will give a tour and explain how the library is organized, how students can check out books, and how to use the library during study hall and WIN times.
Session 4: TCMStrong student leaders will take students on a building tour.
Session 5: TCMStrong student leaders will take students to their lockers and give them several opportunities to practice opening their locker.
Session 6: TCMStrong student leaders will lead teambuilding activities within their small group.

Usually around August 20th!Finding Lockers and Classes
We expect that students will struggle with lockers and finding classrooms in the first few weeks. There will be teachers in the hallways waiting to help students find their classes or open their lockers.
Teachers are also very understanding when students arrive late to class while still learning the building. TCMStrong student mentors are also available throughout the building to help.
Feel free to come in before the first day of school to practice with a lock. Once school starts, you can also come after the school day ends to practice.

What do I need to know about technology?
All students are provided with a laptop at TCMS. You will learn about this as well as Schoology, Microsoft 365, and SchoolTool at orientation this summer.
Parents/ GUardians: If you do not currently have a SchoolTool account set up, please reach out to the TCMS Counseling Office at 585-242-5100 ext. 3525.
Your child’s teachers will send you information on how to access their courses in Schoology once the school year begins.

What might my schedule look like?
Getting Set for Success
Start with creating good habits on the first day!
* Check SchoolTool and Schoology daily. This proactive process only takes a few minutes and is extremely valuable for tracking assignments and test preparation.
* In SchoolTool, you can see running averages, assignment grades, and missing work. In Schoology, you can see where students will submit many of their assignments (as well as test prep tools that teachers create). There is also a Schoology calendar with upcoming assignments and tests.
* Use your planner in each class and check off completed work at home each evening.
* Find an organization system that works for you. Some students do just fine with an individual folder or binder for each class. If you struggle with managing papers or remembering to bring home assignments, using a single binder with pocket folders for each class might be helpful. You can bring it back and forth between home and school each night.

Is WIN at TCMS the same as it is at FRES?
All students at TCMS are scheduled into WIN time at the end of the day.
This period of the day provides opportunities for academic support. Weekly community-building lessons take place during this time as well.
