In Year 1, we have been learning about how we are all unique, and have been celebrating all of the things that make us as special as we are!

We have collected all of our ideas, thoughts, learning and experiences together into this book to share with you - read on to find out more!

As well as celebrating and sharing our uniqueness, we have also looked at language, birthplace, accents, dialect, food, celebrations and culture.

We used Shu's story from the Empathy Week 2021 videos, to connect with each other.

We did this by creating a book of the plates of food we would choose to represent us - either our favourite foods, or ones that have special meaning or memories.

We used Shu's story from the Empathy Week 2021 videos, to connect with each other.

We did this by creating a book of the plates of food we would choose to represent us - either our favourite foods, or ones that have special meaning or memories.

We also used our learning around Empathy Week to think about how we could use language, pictures, actions and expressions to make others feel warm and welcome.

We collected this work into our Empathy Wall and used it to prepare for coming back to school after lockdown.

Our Year 1 Empathy Wall - Wakelet

We shared our Empathy Wall with all of the Year 1 children, parents and carers and staff - everybody at home and at school, to help us to feel welcome and less worried about lockdown and coming back to school.

Now that we are all back together again in school, we remind ourselves of how to be kind and welcoming by visiting our Empathy Wall.

Makaton

In Year 1, we have learnt that some people use a type of sign language called Makaton to communicate.

Makaton can help people who have difficulty hearing, speaking or using and understanding words.

Autumn learnt some Makaton greetings and phrases for her remote learning during lockdown. Click on Mr Tumble's video for more useful phrases!
