About the Book
8th grade Emergent Bilinguals document the diverse voices of the Edendale community during this historical time. Since March of 2020, people in California have been sheltering-in-place in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19. None of us could have forseen the outcome of a global pandemic. As we wrote the book, schools were just re-opening in April of 2021.
To write this book, students had to create interview questions, record and transcribe interviews, and take or find photographs that best respresented their interviewee.
Some students have included the audio recordings of the interviews or shared their reflections.
Special thanks to Jeffrey Placencia for sharing his expertise on photography with us. Thank you to Voice of Witness for providing us with a class set of Solito, Solita, which was the inspiration and catalyst for writing this book.

How was it having COVID?
It was very bad I couldn’t taste or smell and my whole body was sore.

Julianna, my cousin is from Oakland, CA during the pandemic Julianna has been cleaning her house, watching Netflix, watching siblings, and going to school. During the Interview Julianna and I were trying to be as serious as we can.
How did the pandemic affect your life?
I feel like I got more anxious seeing people, like social anxiety.

During this interview I’ve realized that this pandemic is not easy and many people have to work harder because they have lost their job. Taking care of you siblings, cleaning, and doing school at the same time is not easy. Having your parents at work most of the time is hard. I hope people will understand what other people go through during this pandemic.
Do you miss in person school and why?
Yes, I miss it a lot. I miss how we all get to be together in the same area not 6 feet apart laughing and hanging out and yea.
