Cover designed by Karol PerezAbout the Book
Emergent Bilinguals in the Newcomer program document the diverse voices of the Edendale community during this incredible time. Since March of 2020, people in California have been sheltering-in-place in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19. None of us could have forseen the outcome of a global pandemic. As we wrote the book, schools were just re-opening in April of 2021.
To write this book, students had to create interview questions, record and transcribe interviews in their home language, translate their interviews into English for writing, and find photographs or images that best respresented their interviewee.
Students included a recording of their reflections about the project in their home language to honor and promote multilingualism.
Special thanks to Maria Patino and Weihan Chen. This book could not have been done without their support.

Interview:
Can you tell me more about your experience being in this quarantine ?
I have experience knowing safety protocols to prevent contagion since through my work I have contact with patients who are positive for COVID-19.
How has your life changed being in a pandemic ?
My life changed since we cannot be with our family and friends . We could be asymptomatic and still infect others.
What did you learn about COVID-19 ?
It is a very contagious virus. The biggest problem is it gives you respiratory problems. That is why it is necessary to use the mask properly since the virus can enter through the mouth and nose.

Entrevista:
