About the Book
7th grade Emergent Bilinguals document the diverse voices of the Edendale community during this incredible time. Since March of 2020, people in California have been sheltering-in-place in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19. None of us could have forseen the outcome of a global pandemic. As we were writing the book, schools were just re-opening in April of 2021.
To write this book, students had to create interview questions, record and transcribe interviews, and take photographs that best respresented their interviewee.
Some students included the audio recording of their interview or shared their reflections.
Special thanks to Jeffrey Placencia for sharing his expertise on photography with us. Thank you to Voice of Witness for providing us with a class set of Solito, Solita, which was the inspiration and catalyst for writing this book.

How do you feel about wearing the mask?
My little sister, Sophia, was born in Oakland, California, and she now lives in San Leandro. While Sheltering-in- Place, she has been going to the school in-person School and also going outside, and going to the store during the pandemic. In the interview, Sophia shared how the pandemic became really huge.
How I feel wearing the mask is that it is discomfortable but we have to wear it.
What did you think when COVID-19 first happened?
I thought the pandemic was not big and now it is a bit more big.
How has the pandemic affected your life?
The pandemic has affected me. When we go anywhere we have to wear a mask and we used to not wear a mask when the pandemic wasn’t here.
While doing this project, I learned everyone has their own opinions and different perspectives. Doing the interview felt a bit scary because I wasn't ready, and for the next time I know how to be prepared for the next interview. I hope that readers can learn how COVID-19 affected us. That way, in the future, people can read our history and understand our experiences.
