Journal entry October 11, 1492

After 10 weeks of difficult conditions sailing through the Atlantic Ocean, I can see India! I came this way to find a new route to India, China, Japan and the Spice Islands. If I can reach these lands, I will be able to bring back rich cargoes of silks and spices.

For months I have been sailing from island to island looking for pearls, precious stones, gold, silver, spices, and other objects and merchandise that I had promised to my Spanish patrons, but I did not find much.

In January 1493, I left several dozen men behind in a makeshift settlement on Hispaniola, as I left for Spain.
This is me leaving men behind in a makeshift settlement
This is me spreading Christianity to the Indians
If I can find the Indians I will be able to spread my religion with them.
I will update this tomorrow if I find anything new.
Bye for now.

Finally onto land we are!
We see the Indians and they do not speak our language. “They … brought us parrots, balls of cotton, spears and many other things which they exchanged for the glass beads and hawks’ bells. They willingly traded everything they owned.
This is the part of North America that we travelled to
These are words that describe my journey
They were well-built. I pulled out a sword and they took it by the edge and cut themselves out of ignorance.
Here are the Indians grabbing my sword
They would make fine servants … With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want”.
That’s it for now, I’ll see you later.
