The corona virus is a kind of virus. Viruses are tiny germs that need a microscope to be seen.
Think of the virus as a bottle of glitter that has been spilt in the classroom. If someone has it on their hands or body and touches another person, then they will have it on them too. A virus is pretty much the same. If someone has it, they can get it from someone else and pass it on to someone else until everyone is covered in glitter.
What is Covid-19?
Our school has many classrooms, just like the world we live in has many countries. Now what happens if one of the infected kids leave the classroom and spread the glitter all over the school? When a virus spreads across a country and travels around the world to many other countries and gets lots of people sick, this is what's called a Pandemic.
Covid-19 is a respiratory virus that spreads primarily through water droplets that are generated when an infected person sneezes or coughs, causing droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose to the air around them. If someone accidentally breathes in the air with the coronavirus germs in it, they will most likely get the disease.
How do you catch the corona-virus?
Germs can also get on and into an infected persons body if they touch their nose or mouth. If the person with the virus germs uses a door handle, the invisible germs can live on the handle for hours and when someone else opens the door, they can become infected as the germs are now on their hands too. To protect yourself from the virus, cleaning your hands frequently with hand-sanitiser or washing them with soap and water works effectively.
A person with coronavirus will develop a sore throat, cough, tiredness, a fever and can suffer shortness of breath and find it hard to breathe. People will usually be ill for a few days but luckily each of us has more than 10 billion different types of antibodies inside us that are like weapons to fight viruses. Tiny cells in our blood make the antibodies that catch the virus, where the blood cells swallow them up and destroy them so that the person can get better.
What are the symptoms of coronavirus?
Nearly everyone that has a healthy body is able to fight the virus, yet there are some people that find it harder as their bodies aren’t as strong. This can have an impact on people who already have illnesses such as heart disease, respiratory problems or cancer, and also people older than 70 years old and babies as their bodies are weaker.
The most common symptoms of having COVID-19 are fever, dry cough and tiredness.
What happens if you think you have coronavirus?
If people think they may have coronavirus, a doctor can do a test to check if they are positive or negative.
If people think they may have coronavirus, a doctor can do a test to check if they are positive or negative. If they are found positive in having the disease, they must stay home and quarantine for at least 2 weeks or until they are well again. In some cases, people have had to go to hospital and be put on a ventilator to help them breathe. Sadly, sometimes this is not enough and people around the world have died from the virus.
