Nelson visits Fiji

Nelson learnt that farming was important in Fiji. Farmers grew crops like sugar cane, coconuts, bananas, pineapples and vegetables. 

They were all very friendly towards Nelson. The Fijians would always say bula when they met him. Bula means hello in the Fijian language. When they left they would say, moce which meant goodbye.&nbsp;They said yandra which meant good morning in their language.

Visitors from overseas come to Fiji on planes.  Nelson arrived by plane which landed at the Nadi International Airport. He travelled between the islands on boats.

The best way to enjoy these fruits is by removing the skin, chopping it and cooking it in boiling water.

Nelson met many Fijians and Indians on his trip.

Fiji is a country in the Pacific Ocean. It is made up of more than 300 islands. Viti Levu and Vanua Levu are two of the largest islands.

To buy things on his trip, Nelson used Fijian money that was made up of notes and coins. There were two, five, ten, twenty and fifty dollar notes. There were one and two dollar coins. Sometimes he also used one, two, five, ten, twenty and fifty cent coins.

Nelson found crops like taro, cassava and breadfruit interesting because he had never seen them before. Taro and cassava are root crops. Breadfruit grows on trees.

The market is another place where fisherman bring their catch to sell. Farmers also bring their fresh produce like vegetables and fruits.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nelson was always fascinated by how people climbed these tall trees. Some children were very confident at doing this.

The Indian people spoke hindi. They would say kaise hai Nelson, which meant how are you. They also greeted him by saying namaste.

Nelson always loved going to the beach. The water was crystal clear. He could see little fishes playing games with each other in shallow water. Nelson tried to catch them with his hands but they were always too fast for him.

Coconut trees also grow in the wild. Many of them can be seen near the beaches. Some can be very tall and sometimes they can be taller than a two-storey building.

Every now and then, Nelson also saw fisherman who were either fishing or trying to sell their catch by the roadside. People liked to buy them because they were so fresh.

One day Nelson saw some Indian people singing and dancing in a street parade.

On another day he saw some Fijian people at a ceremony.

Nelson learnt a lot of from his trip to Fiji. Do you know what these words mean?

There were other activities to do at the beach. Children enjoyed building sand castles. It was always fun.&nbsp;

There were lots of shells in different shapes and sizes. Nelson liked to collect them and make patterns with them.

The milk and the flesh inside a young coconut is very tasty. To drink the milk and eat the flesh, the husk had to be carefully removed with a long knife. Nelson loved coconuts. 

Nelson's best time of the day was sunset. It was relaxing to see the sun set over the ocean. He loved his Fiji trip. He will go back again.
