However, Maria had never received a Christmas present. His father had explained to him that gifts were not the most important thing, that it was a time to enjoy as a family and spend time together. Maria understood it, but she didn't like it very much because she would also have liked to tell to her friends about the gifts she had received for Christmas.

When Christmas Eve arrived, Maria prepared the dinner and was about to go to bed when she heard a noise at the door of the house. She went out to see what was happening with a flashlight, full of illusion thinking that it would be Santa Claus with a gift for her but what she found was an old box. When he looked inside, he discovered a kitten that was crying. The girl approached, picked him up and carried him to the fire to warm up the kitten, and called him Sparks.

When the Christmas holidays passed and she had to go back to school, his joy was so great that there was no room for emotion. While all her classmates talked about the gifts Santa Claus had brought them, Maria was thinking about what Sparks was doing, and she finally understood what her father meant when he explained that Christmas was not limited to gifts. And she was clear that living in the forest was one of the greatest gifts of her life.
