Other than just being a really cool thing, the tsunami is also really important for other things. Oregon is in a Tsunami risk area. It’s good for people to really know how powerful tsunamis really are and the impact they can have.

Even though it’s not the clearest photo, this is a picture of an octopus. I took the liberty of naming her Josephine.

I chose to emphasize the heater because we didn’t know how to turn on the heater the first night. Let me tell you, it was the coldest night of my life. So the heater was a really important part of the next 2 nights.

The Tillamook cheese factory is built here for a very specific reason. The more lush and wet the climate is the better the grass will be. This means that the cattle will have better food to graze on. If you built it in a hot climate the grass would be to parched and dry.

This is Ailie, Izzy, and my reactions to the cheese. I did not enjoy it.

Cannon Beach is most well known for Haystack Rock. It is sometimes called the 3rd largest intertidal rock in the world.

Citizen scientists are very important. As hard as scientists work, there are only so many of them. Citizen scientists can help scientist out by researching and collecting more data than they could. They are also important because it created public awareness. Someone might not really care about shrimp or how they were doing. That person might change their tune if they saw how many were infected with parasite and want to protect them. Citizen scientists are also important because they can add a new perspective to research. A citizen who lived in the area and knew a lot about this area might add a  new perspective to a scientist who didn’t know much about the area. Citizen scientists are really important.

Wolves are just so cool and majestic. How could anybody not be excited to see them?

I just think wolves in general are amazing. But I also really hope that there will be little wolf cubs there! That would be absolutely amazing.

Columbia River Maritime Museum First Nations Section

Like most places in North America, before the Eurpean settlers came, the Colombia River wa occupied by First Nations groups who lived there. In this case, specifically the Chinhookan people lived there. This area was very important to the Chinhookan people. They would fish in the Colombia River and make tools aned things out of the Western Red Cedar. The first Europeans came and set up trade with the Indigenous people. Beavers were the most valued, so they were traded quite often. Over time, more and more Europeans came set up their own communities there. People from many different countries came such as Italy, Ireland, Scotland, and Prussia. These groups set up groups and societies to practice their cultural traditions and religions. I’m sure that once more immigrants came the Indigenous land was taken over and used for these new communities. The land that was once Chinhookan land was used for canneries and businesses seen as ‘more important.’

Honestly, going in, I didn’t have much faith in our group. In our first quest, if I’m being honest, we really didn’t do well. This time, I was pleasantly surprised. Due to the fact we didn’t read the whole paper, (fine, it was my fault) we didn’t win, but I know that we tried hard. Nobody in our group gave up. Everybody tried their hardest. Even though it was my fault about the paper, nobody gave me a really hard time about it. It’s pretty easy to say what I could’ve done better. READ THE WHOLE PAPER. So in the future I’m definitely doing that and maybe we have a chance.

Wolf Haven is a very important sanctuary. Obviously, it saves wolves lives. Many wolves are killed because of hunting or that people can’t take care of them. Wolf Haven provides a place for them to live happily and safely.saving wolves is also important because of the ecosystem. If you save the wolves, you save a very important part of the ecosystem. We saw this in the pictures of Yellowstone. Once wolves were re-introduced it started to thrive again. Another reason that it’s important is because it educates people. If people come and learn about wolves and how they need to be in their natural habitat and not be pets, maybe more people will want to protect them. This would result in more wolves and less need for places like this. I think that the main takeaway for this place is even if you’re afraid of wolves or think that they’re dangerous, they belong in their natural habitat for the good of the ecosystem.

I learned basically everything at Fort Stevens. Mostly because I never knew about it before, but also because they also just taught us SO MUCH. The most interesting thing that I learned was the Japanese shelling on Fort Stevens. On Sunday, June, 21, 1942, a Japanese submarine came and shot 17 shells at the Oregon coast. It was the first attack on the United States mainland since the war of 1812. After much consideration, the Americans did not fire back. I was really interested in this because I had obviously heard of Pearl Harbor and I knew that people were really anxious that the Japan see would attack afte that, but I never knew that they actuallly did.

I would NEVER cross the bar. Just looking at those videos all I can think is  ‘no’. Very few people can cross the bar and I am just not one of them. Not only would it be terrifying, I would totally get seasick. This may not be a cool reason but I don’t think I’d really enjoy the trip if I was throwing up over the side trying not to be flung off the boat.I’m really impressed by the people who are able to do that, but not in a million years would I. 

Depoe Bay is known as the smallest navigatable harbor. On March 11, 2011, the port was damaged by a tsunami caused by an earthquake off the coast of Japan.

Activities like this are super important to small towns. Partly because they bring in tourists to the town which brings in customers for everyone. It’s also important because the locals also must enjoy High Life Adventures. It’s like a fun thing for locals to do on the weekends aned stuff. Kind of like Seymour is to us, it draws tourists but it’s also there for the locals to enjoy.

It’s pretty simple why I chose this video. I made all the photos into one video. This video is basically the highlights of the day.

Hatfield Marine Science Center Speedy Science

The experiment we did was really cool. We raced crabs! Each person in our group got a crab and we raced them. We wanted to know what size of crab went the fastest. Our hypothesis was that the small ones would be fastest. The results varied, but overall, the bigger ones went faster.

The Yaquina Head Lighthouse rocks are very extraordinary THey are made out of lava then smoothed out by the waves. These rocks are a non-renewable resource. This means if everyone took one, they would soon be gone.

It doesn’t say it here, but of course we are at the Yaquina Head Beach!!

Fun Fact:  Building the lighthouse was a huge challenge. The harsh weather made it hard for the construction crews to get anything done.

The Yaquina Head Lighthouse was built in 1872-1873. It took nearly 2 years to complete. It was constructed so the ships could see their way and not be crashed on the rocks. Keepers recorded it in a log book. Inspections would come at any time. During WW11 the light house was used to warn if there were any Japanese submarines. It was later set to an automated light and no more light keepers came.

Hatfield Marine Science Center R.O.V. Challenge

Our group created the ‘JAWN 2000’. We started off with a plan, obviously. Our plan doesn’t look remotely like what it turned out to be. We kind of built our plan as we went along. I think something that we did really well as a group was problem-solving. We had a lot of challenged, the sides weren’t even, then we couldn’t find the right piece, but as a group we worked them out and JAWN ended up looking pretty good. When we put JAWN first in the water it looked great, then we figured out that the up and down propeller wasn’t working so we had to keep adjusting and making it better. In the end, we ended up picking up 4 objects. The only thing we could’ve one better is to pay more attention if something wan’t working. I thing we each saw a few errors but we ignored it so we could go test. It probably would’ve saved us a lot of time if we just addressed the issue at the start.

The Astoria Column is 125 feet tall and is covered on the outside by a frieze that depicts Oregon history.

Obviously this book was made to document Oregon. This was my first field study and it went really well. Even though this book was a little annoying to make, I’m glad I did it. This way I’ll have the photos and explanations. So anyway, this book is all about my friends and I, the places we went to, the food we had, and all the hundreds of things we did there

One fact that I learned from the boat was about the whales. The whales travel up to Alaska for the summer to feed and fill up their bellies. Later they travel down and rest for the winter. This is why we got lucky enough to see the whales. They were travelling up north.
