The New England colonies were founded because the puritans wanted to make the Church of England better and improve it. The Puritans were also very strict about they ran things . You had to attend church every Sunday and every day it was required. In Maryland you were Catholic but in Massachusetts you cold be a Puritan.

These colonists did not have to work hard to make money, the forest's were already filled with trees all they had to do was chop them down and sell the lumber.

Another way to make money was to fish and whale, the harbors were full of fish and you could make money fast. Unlike the Southern colonies you didn't have to work very hard to make money.
The geography of New England
The New England colonies were known for their rocky soil, dense forests, and natural harbors. And it was great if you were a fisherman as well because the harbors were full of fish and there were lots of whales nearby. The Southern Colonies as well as the New England colonies had deep harbors which made it easy to trade.
Harvard
One of the first schools in New England was Harvard. The fist thing that the Puritans did when they got to Massachusetts was build a school. The Puritans were very serious about their education. They wanted their children to be very smart. Now Harvard is one of the best schools in the world. Some of the other best schools in the world such as Harvard started in the 13 colonies. The University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University are the best schools in the East.
