The New England colonies were known for their rocky soil, dense forests, and natural harbors. And it was great if you were a fisherman as well because the harbors were full of fish and there were lots of whales nearby. The Southern Colonies as well as the New England colonies had deep harbors which made it easy to trade.

One of the first schools in New England was Harvard. The fist thing that the Puritans did when they got to Massachusetts was build a school. The Puritans were very serious about their education. They wanted their children to be very smart. Now Harvard is one of the best schools in the world. Some of the other best schools in the world such as Harvard started in the 13 colonies. The University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University are the best schools in the East.
