What is a book study?

Join us this summer for a book study! Each book study is described on the following pages. Click on the "sign up" link for the study you wish to join.

Payment Information:
Cost:  $25 per participant/per book study

Please make checks payable to the Town of Marshfield

Please mail checks, prior to the start of the book study, to:

Will books be provided or do I need to get my own book?
You will need to purchase your own book.

Will I earn PDPs for participating in a book study?
Yes! You will earn PDPs for completing the book study (reading & participating in asynchronous online discussions as well as completing any related activities).  The number of PDPs varies by book.   You will receive a PDP certificate at the end of the book study.

What is the format of each book study?
All book studies are entirely online and asynchronous and hosted in Canvas (our learning management system). There are optional Zoom live sessions offered twice during each book study.

How long is each book study?
Each book study spans 10 weeks over the summer, allowing for the rest, relaxation, travel, and slower pace educators deserve over summer break!

Is there a reading schedule?
A suggested schedule is shared to keep participants moving through the reading and discussions. However, participants have the flexibility to read and engage in discussions on their own schedule as long as all discussions and activities are completed by August 25, 2023.

Equity by Design

Participants will read and discuss Culturally Responsive Teaching & the Brain by Zaretta Hammond. Through meeting the requirements of this book study participants will read Culturally Responsive Teaching & the Brain; participate in discussions that make connections between the text and their practice; and gain insight, strategies, and evidence-based practical applications for designing and implementing brain-compatible culturally responsive instruction.
Participants will read and discuss Equity by Design: Delivering on the Power & Promise of UDL by Mirko Chardin & Katie Novak. Through meeting the requirements of this book study participants will read Equity by Design; participate in discussions that make connections between the text and their practice; and gain insight, strategies, and evidence-based practical applications for UDL to create more inclusive learning environments.

Participants will read and discuss Culturally Responsive Design for English Learners: The UDL Approach by Dr. Patti Kelly Ralabate and Dr. Loui Lord Nelson. Through meeting the requirements of this book study participants will read Culturally Responsive Design for English Learners: The UDL Approach; participate in discussions that make connections between the text and their practice; and gain insight, strategies, and practical applications for designing and implementing culturally responsive goals, methods, materials and assessments to proactively meet the needs of English Learners.
